About Government Medical College, Jammu

Government Medical College, Jammu, a premier institute of J&K (Union Territory) started in the year, 1973 in a temporary building with the object to provide quality education and deliver the health care service to the people of this region. This institution located in the heart of Temple City Jammu.

This institution started with the aim to train fifty medical students for MBBS course per year and to serve as referral hospital for Jammu Province. But now the seating capacity has increased up to 180 students per year, Besides MBBS course the college also imparts post-graduate training Course.

From the make shift sheds of years, with meagre staff and equipment’s, to the present-day mammoth complete with chain of adequately staff and fully equipped associated hospitals, this college is now credited to the amongst a few top institutions in the Northern Indian.

The institution started with a total of nine hundred beds and with the inauguration of Medical College Hospital building in the year of 1993, it has now increased to 1700 beds including associated hospitals including Sir. Col. R.N. Chopra Nursing Home.

At present, Govt. Medical College, Jammu is catering to the patients from whole of Jammu province, part of Kashmir valley and adjoining areas of neighbouring states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Five Teaching Hospitals namely, Medical College Hospital, CD Hospital, SMGS Hospital, Psychiatry Hospital & Dental Hospital associated with Medical College.

There are 800 doctors including faculty and residents, 1000 Paramedical Staff including supervisory staff,1500 Class-III & IV employees working in the college and its associated hospitals. Three Blocks.i.e., R.s. Pura, Kot-Bhalwal and Dansal are also affiliated to Medical College, Jammu for training of Undergraduates & Post-graduate students of the college.

Facilities / Infrastructure in Government Medical College, Jammu

Animal House

An animal house with 40-50 animals has been established in the college complex for the practical of students of UG’s and PG’s

Auditorium

The college has auditorium with seating Capacity of 830 seats which is located in the 3rd & 4th floor of administrative block.

Canteen

Two separate canteens for faculty members, students, staff members have been established in the ground and on 5th floor of the college building.

Central Computer Cell

A Central Computer Cell has established in administrative Block of Principal for the Administration, Accounts and Student section. Whole the work of the college has computerized. All the section has connected with the principal and connecting the various departments with the principal is going on. Internet facility is also available.

Central Library

Central Library of GMC, Jammu has four Under-graduates and two Post-graduate and one staff common reading. One Journal section, one reference section, one teacher’s section and reading hall with the seating capacity of one hundred is available in the library. 329 and more (Indian and Foreign) journals subscribed annually for the research work. The library has equipped with Internet facility for the research work. Photocopy facilities is also available in the library section. A web zone (Internet) facility has introduced recently for the faculty members and the PG students.

Examination and Lecture Hall

One Examination Hall with 200 sitting capacity & Thirteen Lecturer Theatre are available in this GMC.

 Hostel

The college has the facility of separate hostels for Under-graduates and Post-graduates. Three blocks with three storyed for Post-graduates and Under-graduates are available for boys and three storied with two blocks are for girls. Total rooms are 549. All the hostels are situated with the college complex at a distance varying from 200-500 meters from different hospitals.

Photographic-cum-Audio-visual Unit and Medical Education Unit.

A designed Photographic-cum-Audio-visual unit has set up in the college for learning and for working on programmes to disseminate information. These units have fully equipped with latest equipment’s and accessories.

Sport Activities
The Institute has upheld the healthy tradition of maintaining the intellectual as well as the physical fitness of the students. The facilities for indoor as well as outdoor games like table tennis, badminton, cricket; lawn tennis, football etc. have been consistently available to the enthusiasts. At the end of each sport’s meet, a special function is held where medals and certificates are given to winners/runners-up. Sports section also organizes friendly matches in order to keep sportive atmosphere in the campus.

Cultural and Social Activities
The students of the Institute hold a number of cultural, literary and social activities every year. Such activities to promote a common sense of brotherhood among the various segments of students and staff of the Institute besides providing the much-needed diversion from busy academic and service routine.

Eligibility & Admission Process for Government Medical College, Jammu

Eligibility MBBS

– Pass with minimum 50 % marks in Intermediate (Bi.P.C)

– Must Qualify in NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test)

Admission Process

Admission to the MBBS programme is based on candidates’ performance in NEET. Once the NEET results are declared, then the eligible candidates are called for counselling process.
