About Aarupadai Veedu Medical College, Pondicherry

Thirumuruga Kirupananda Variyar Thavathiru Sundara Swamigal Medical Educational and Charitable Trust started by our Founder Chancellor Dr A. Shanmugasundaram in the year 1981 to serve the needy in the society. The trust established its very first medical college at Pondicherry, Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital, in the year 2000. Located at Pondicherry- Cuddalore Road, a national highway, the self-contained and serene campus spread over 44 acres of lush green lands.

Initially, it affiliated to Pondicherry University, the institution subsequently came under the ambit of Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation Deemed to be University, in the year 2004. The institution offers postgraduate courses in 13 disciplines and PhD programmes across various specialities and interdisciplinary areas. The MBBS programme started in the year 2000-2001 and continued ever since. At present, the annual intake is 150 MBBS and 74 postgraduate students; currently, over 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students are pursuing their studies at AVMCH.

Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital offers patient care, diagnostic, rehabilitative, preventive and pharmacy services. With its fully equipped ICCU, ICU, PICU, NICU and high dependency areas, modular operation theatres equipped with contemporary anaesthesia equipment, the broad and super-speciality departments of cardiology, urology, medical gastroenterology, plastic surgery, paediatric surgery and nephrology, AVMC Hospital offers state-of-art tertiary care services to the people of the union territory of Pondicherry and the nearby districts of Tamil Nadu. Various government and third-party insurance schemes are also functional in the system.

All departments in the college are fully equipped with the necessary infrastructure. The institute has a well-appointed, spacious library with internet, Wi-Fi, audio-visual facilities and an e-learning centre. The campus has Wi-Fi enabled for the convenience of staff and students. The auditorium can accommodate 750 persons for large group events.

The institute houses a clinical skills lab, which is in the process of upgraded to a full-fledged simulation centre. A dynamic medical education unit conducts the necessary faculty and professional development activities. The scientific forum is a vibrant presence in the institute with its regular academic activities. Apart from this, all departments conduct periodic CMEs, symposia, guest lectures and other academic events for the benefit of faculty and students.

Facilities / Infrastructure in Aarupadai Veedu Medical College, Pondicherry

Hostel And Residential Facilities

AVMC is a Wi-Fi enabled campus. There are hostels for the students and residential quarters for faculty within the campus. The residential facility for the staff nurses is in the annexe building, not very far from the main campus. The students’ hostels come with single, double and triple occupancies. There is a separate hostel with AC rooms which offered on extra payment. There is an in-house laundry facility that provides services at nominal rates.

Canteen And Dining Facilities

AVMC campus has a very good mess facility that caters to the nutritional needs of the students. It offers both north and south Indian food prepared in a most hygienic kitchen by trained chefs. The menu prepared taking into consideration, the preferences of the students.

Apart from the regular mess, there is a food court—a vibrant, hot spot where students can satiate themselves with their extra and beyond mess hours food cravings.

Grooming Facilities

There is an excellent in-house spa for girls and gym facilities for both boys and girls, which equipped with treadmills, weights etc.

Apart from these facilities, there are bicycles that the students can use to move around within the 40-acre campus.

Bank And Temple

For the convenience of the students and the public as well, Axis Bank has an ATM at the main gate. Keeping in mind the religious faith and practices of the students, staff, and patients, the college has a temple at the entrance to the campus. Everybody’s favourite and the most adorable deity — Lord Ganesha —housed at the main gate as well as in the college complex.

Recreation Facilities

There are various recreation facilities for students, both indoor and outdoor; namely, basketball, cricket, volleyball, football, tennis,  table tennis and badminton. AVMC also has a music band that performs at various intra- and inter-college events.

General Stores

There is a general store located within the campus that caters to all the students and staff living on the campus. This store stocks groceries, vegetables, fruits, and stationery. The products are of good quality and sold at reasonable rates and a proper invent fruits, maintained. It is in fact a one-stop shop for all your needs. The store also sells various medical student-specific items like dissection sets, stethoscopes, knee hammers, torch etc.

Indoor game facilities: Table tennis board size = 1.525 m × 2.74 m. Badminton court size = 6.10 m × 13.40 m

Gymnasium facilities: Gymnasium area of 700 sq. ft, adequately equipped with facilities such as multigym set, multi-leg exercise, multi-home gym, treadmill, vibrator machine, bench press, different weights of dumbbells, different categories of rods and rubber, steel plates.

Water purifying plant: Every day, around 22,000 litres of RO purified water supplied for drinking and the dialysis unit. Totally, four RO plants with a total capacity of 3750 LPH and 18 water dispensers placed all around the campus. TDS of the water is checked regularly, and the pre-filters and chemical membrane treatment done on a regular basis as per SOP.

Saloon and spa: A separate dedicated salon with spa located in the ladies hostel for the use of the female students and faculties at a low cost with the best service.

Yoga: All students have regular yoga sessions. Our students have participated in yoga competitions and have won prizes.

In the hospital there are 26 departments including Accident & Emergency.  The bed strength is 540.  Patients from Pondicherry as well as from surroundings villages attend the hospital.  The hospital area is 2,20,000 sq. ft.

Facilities for Special Radiography (For example, Barium and Dye Studies), Ultrasonographs, C.T. Scans , mammographs, Echo Cardiography, TMT, MRI are available

The hospital has latest equipments such as MRI, CT Scan, dialyser etc..

The MRI is open type and is 0.3 tesla capacity.

CASUALITY

The casualty section has been upgraded to Accident and emergency section with 20 Post Graduates trained in this specialty.  The Accident and Emergency section is capable of managing any sort of emergency cases.   The casualty has ventilator, defibrillator, mobile X ray ECG machine etc.

DEPARTMENTS

Apart from the regular clinical departments super specialty departments such as Plastic Surgery, Nephrology, gastroenterology and Vascular Surgery are functioning in the hospital.  Well-qualified doctors are working in the various clinical departments.

OPERATION-THEATRES

There are 12 main operation theatres, which are air conditioned ones.  Two are for General Surgery two are for Obstetrics and Gynecology and one each for E.N.T, Orthopedics and Ophthalmology.  Special equipment such as c–arm, resuscitation equipments, operating microscopes etc. are available.

Eligibility MBBS

– Pass with minimum 50 % marks in Intermediate (Bi.P.C)

– Must Qualify in NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test)

Admission Process

Admission to the MBBS programme is based on candidates’ performance in NEET. Once the NEET results are declared, then the eligible candidates are called for counselling process.
