University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Collegium Medicum, School of Medicine Olsztyn The Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn was officially founded on 17th July 2007. Since 1st September 2017, it has been reorganized as the School of Medicine of the Collegium Medicum, testifying to its increasing academic status and organizational development.

During the academic year 2007/2008, the faculty continued to provide courses in the Nursing School (formerly operated under the Faculty of Biology) while at the same time making preparations for introducing a full Doctor of Medicine (MD) program in the School of Medicine, in addition to MSc programs in Nursing.

To provide the best education, the Medical School Curriculum Committee designed a contemporary curriculum that focused on innovative teaching methods, incorporation of best international practices, and attracting renowned senior researchers from all over Poland. The plan included systematically establishing new preclinical and clinical departments in line with an established schedule.

One of the most significant achievements in the development of the faculty was the purchase and conversion of the 103rd Military Hospital into a Clinical University Hospital, opened in June 2009 by the Minister of Health, Dr. Ewa Kopacz. 

This action not only enhanced the university’s medical foundation but also gave students direct access to contemporary healthcare facilities. Meanwhile, strategic contracts were signed with several institutions, such as the Regional Hospital, the Regional Children’s Hospital, the Independent Public Group of Tuberculosis and Pulmonary Diseases, and the Provincial Hospital for the Rehabilitation of Children in Ameryka near Olsztynek. 

Additional cooperation was also maintained with the Cancer Center at the Ministry of Internal Affairs Hospital in Olsztyn. These joint ventures offered an extensive network of outside clinical units, and they constituted a firm groundwork for recently established clinics, departments, and teaching units.

The charter class of medical students was launched on 1st October 2008, officially commencing medical education at the School of Medicine. Students embarked on their studies in new, well-furnished buildings in a number of departments, i.e., Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Medical Biology, Human Physiology, and Emergency Medicine. 

Several of its core science courses were further supplemented by other well-established university faculties, including Chemistry, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Biology, as well as even the Department of Psychology and Sociology within the Faculty of Social Sciences.

On October 1st 2010, the university introduced its English Language Program in Medicine to recruit international students and enhance its international reputation. Heavily invested in the refurbishment of university buildings, construction of contemporary laboratories, and purchase of state-of-the-art equipment. European Union projects were central to this development, most notably the construction of the Collegium Anatomicum, accommodating the Department of Anatomy and the Department of Histology and Human Embryology. 

EU financing also funded sophisticated diagnostic laboratories, such as the Stem Cell Laboratory of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, with high-standard facilities for human cell cultures and high-technology 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) devices.

Another significant milestone was the inauguration of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory on 21st May 2010 under European development funds. This laboratory, which is shared with the Department of Biology, offered advanced equipment for genetic and molecular studies, further enhancing the faculty’s strong commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary working.

Its strength is not just in its medical school, but also in its capacity to tap the wider resources of a large academic institution. There is close collaboration with the Department of Biology, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and the Faculty of Food Science, providing the basis for interdisciplinary research and teaching opportunities. 

Staff and students also get access to university-wide facilities, including the new University Library, opened in 2007, which brought together previously dispersed collections. The library, designed to accommodate 1.5 million books, 500 reading room seats, and 300 group work spaces, greatly improved academic resources and study space.

On 28th February 2011, the Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles (Division of Medical Sciences) awarded the right to confer the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree to the Faculty of Medical Sciences, another milestone on its academic journey.

Lastly, on 1st September 2017, the faculty was divided into two separate units: the School of Medicine, which was solely dedicated to the MD program, and the Faculty of Health Sciences, which still teaches students in courses like Emergency Rescue, Midwifery, Nursing, and Nutrition. 

This organizational separation enabled both faculties to concentrate on their respective academic objectives while upholding high standards of study and research.

The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Collegium Medicum, School of Medicine has just become a member of an impressive initiative on the European scale. The ChallengeEU alliance has been invited by the European Commission to join the prestigious association of European Universities, an elite group that will be creating the universities of the future. 

This forward-looking alliance brings together institutions across Europe to create opportunities for a new generation of students and researchers, enabling them to study, work, and collaborate across borders, languages, academic disciplines, and sectors. The ChallengeEU alliance will officially commence its operations in January 2024.

In the fifth competition round, finished on June 28, almost 500 universities, grouped together in 60 international consortias, battled for the highly sought-after label of European University. Of these, 14 consortias only were selected for funding, and each of them received up to €14.4 million over four years.

Universities that are invited by the European Commission have until the close of business in September 2024 to confirm their engagement by signing the formal agreement.
