University of Rzeszów Faculty of Medicine (Medical College), Rzeszów

The idea of establishing medical education in Rzeszów and the Subcarpathian region can be traced back to the mid-20th century.

About University of Rzeszów Faculty of Medicine

The initiative arose primarily from two pressing needs: the acute shortage of physicians in the region, and the limited capacity of major medical universities in Poland, such as those in Kraków and Lublin, to admit students from the Subcarpathian area.

At that time, young people who aspired to study medicine were often forced to move hundreds of kilometers away from home, which not only created logistical difficulties but also imposed heavy financial burdens. For many talented individuals, particularly from modest backgrounds, these obstacles made pursuing medical studies nearly impossible.

A significant milestone was achieved in 1970, when, through the efforts of Associate Professor Lesław Grzegorczyk and the approval of the Senate of the Medical Academy in Kraków, a Clinical Teaching Team was established in Rzeszów.

Initially, medical training for senior students was conducted across several cities of the region—Rzeszów, Przemyśl, Krosno, and Sanok. However, challenges such as lack of student accommodation, fragmented teaching locations, and insufficient academic supervision hindered the smooth functioning of this arrangement.

To address these concerns, in the academic year 1975/1976, the Medical Academy of Kraków launched a Stationary Medical Studies Program at the Regional Complex Hospital in Rzeszów, designed for students in their fourth, fifth, and sixth years of study.

This initiative attracted a team of highly qualified professors and physicians, many of whom had extensive academic experience in other major Polish centers. Notable names included Professors Andrzej Bentkowski, Emil Bryk, Radosław Cebulski, Władysława Garska, Marek Grzywa, Stanisław Hady, Ryszard Korczowski, Roman Kurzbauer, Andrzej Skręt, Jacek Sławiński, Zbigniew Szmigiel, Kazimierz Ulewicz, and Tadeusz Żaczek. By the 1980s, more than 150 students were pursuing advanced stages of their medical education in Rzeszów, having been transferred from the Medical Academy of Kraków to continue studies closer to their home region.

The dynamic development of the Clinical Teaching Institute culminated in 1985, when Rzeszów hosted a landmark medical conference attended by Deputy Minister of Health Lesław Kryst, Rector of the Kraków Medical Academy Professor Marek Sych, and regional authorities.

The conference resulted in a joint declaration to establish a Second Faculty of Medicine (branch) of the Kraków Medical Academy in Rzeszów, aiming to enable complete medical education from the first year onward. It was envisioned that by 1995, fully trained doctors graduating entirely from Rzeszów would enter the workforce.

However, the political and socio-economic transformations in Poland after 1989 disrupted these ambitious plans. The Medical Academy in Kraków reversed its decision, opting instead to liquidate the Institute of Clinical Teaching in 1991, despite the fact that a modern facility—Regional Hospital No. 2 in Rzeszów—had just been completed to serve as a teaching and research base. This sudden setback appeared to end Rzeszów’s aspirations to establish an independent medical faculty.

Nevertheless, efforts to preserve medical education in the city continued. Professor Lesław Grzegorczyk and several colleagues transferred to the Higher School of Pedagogy (WSP) in Rzeszów in 1992, where they established the Institute of Physical and Health Education

Over time, this institute became a foundation for new health-related disciplines such as rehabilitation and physiotherapy, which gradually expanded into full-fledged medical sciences programs. In 1999, the Association of Professors of Medicine in Rzeszów was formed, uniting academic leaders with the shared mission of establishing a future Faculty of Medicine.

The turning point came with the creation of the University of Rzeszów in 2001, which incorporated these health-related programs. Soon after, new medical majors such as nursing and midwifery were launched, supported by eminent professors recruited from leading medical universities across Poland. With growing academic capacity and increasing demand for healthcare education, the University Senate approved the establishment of the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2005, which was later renamed the Faculty of Medicine in 2006.

The faculty expanded rapidly, offering programs in physiotherapy, nursing, midwifery, emergency medical services, public health, electro radiology, and later dietetics. By 2011, it employed a strong academic staff base, including professors, habilitated doctors, and research specialists, supported by well-equipped facilities on Warszawska Street and teaching partnerships with provincial hospitals in Rzeszów.

Today, the Medical College of the University of Rzeszów stands as the culmination of decades of persistence, collaboration, and determination. It embodies the vision of earlier pioneers while serving as a vital academic hub for the Subcarpathian region, producing highly trained professionals across the medical and health sciences spectrum.

University of Rzeszów Faculty of Medicine – Ranking

The origins of Rzeszów’s and the Podkarpackie region’s medical education lie in the mid-20th century, when the lack of physicians and the small admission capacity in existing universities in Kraków, Lublin, and other Polish cities generated an urgent demand for local medical training.

Numerous teenagers from the region, typically from humble, low-income backgrounds, had to go several hundred kilometers in order to continue their education. This was not only a financial burden but also a deterrent for some of the brightest people who wanted to enter a career in medicine.

The Local academic leaders, however, would not quit. Professor Grzegorczyk and other prominent scholars like Professors Ryszard Cieślik, Władysława Garska, Stanisław Hady, and Jan Przybyłowski moved to the Higher School of Pedagogy in Rzeszów in 1992.

They founded the Institute of Physical Education and Health there, which increasingly developed into rehabilitation and physiotherapy studies. These areas, while initially indirect, set the stage for broader study of medical sciences.

In 1999, the Association of Rzeszów Medical Professors was established, bringing together esteemed scholars and physicians in a united effort to establish a committed Faculty of Medicine. The association was instrumental in pushing for a medical college within the prospective University of Rzeszów through lobbying regional and national governments.

As the University of Rzeszów was officially created in 2001, medical and health science education took the place of one of the strategic goals. The first standalone program—Physiotherapy—was launched in 2000 and, in a short time, followed by Nursing and Midwifery in 2003, both accredited by the State Accreditation Committee.

The Ministry of National Education and Sport officially accredited the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2005, subsequently changing the name to the Faculty of Medicine in 2006. In subsequent years, the faculty expanded significantly, introducing new programs in Emergency Medical Services, Public Health, Electroradiology, and Dietetics, with an effective academic staff and advanced infrastructure behind it.

Today, the University of Rzeszów’s College of Medical Sciences (previously Faculty of Medicine) is a testament to decades of determination, foresight, and regional co-operation. Although young compared to Poland’s prestigious historic medical universities, it has emerged as a contemporary and rapidly developing academic hub.

Its programs are accredited, internationally focused, and backed by collaborations with regional hospitals and research centers. The university is further developing its position as a center of medical education and research for southeastern Poland, promoting both national and international reputation.
