About University of Nottingham School of Medicine

Following an announcement by the Minister of Health in July 1964, planning commenced immediately, with the University forming a Medical School Advisory Committee to develop proposals for the new institution. Based on its recommendations, a Local Joint Committee comprising University and NHS representatives was formed to oversee the school’s development, supported by a Planning Team managing daily operations.

The chosen site in Lenton, adjacent to the main University campus, provided convenient access but faced delays due to objections from local landowners and residents, postponing construction beyond the originally scheduled start in 1969. Despite these setbacks, the first 48 students began their studies in October 1970 in temporary facilities and local hospitals. Teaching initially focused on foundational subjects under six professors, with the Dean, Professor Greenfield, also leading the Department of Physiology.

The curriculum was structured in three parts: three years of pre-clinical education leading to a BMedSci degree, two years of clinical training resulting in a BMBS, followed by a two-year in-service training period, with full registration granted after the first year. The first BMedSci degrees were awarded in 1973, followed by BMBS degrees in 1975, and GMC registration in 1976. Construction of the Queen’s Medical Centre, the combined Medical School and University Hospital, was carried out in stages. Stage 1, which included much of the academic space and 440 hospital beds, was completed in 1977 and officially opened by the Queen on 28 July 1977.

Clinical academic departments were progressively developed in existing hospitals, with NHS consultants becoming Clinical Teachers. With clinical teaching fully launched in 1973, departments such as Surgery, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Child Health, and Therapeutics expanded alongside faculty and student growth. The student intake increased from 48 in 1970 to 130 by 1980, and by 2014 it reached approximately 346 annually.

Over the years, the school has evolved significantly, introducing postgraduate courses, launching Nursing as a degree subject with the Department of Nursing in 1990, and opening a satellite medical school in Derby in 2003 for a new graduate-entry medical programme.
