University of Miyazaki Faculty of Medicine in Miyazaki Prefecture traces its history back to Japan’s 1973 governmental policy to expand medical school education into areas where there were no well-established medical centers.

About University of Miyazaki Faculty of Medicine

In preparation for this policy, Miyazaki Prefecture created a planning office in October 1973 to plan a new medical college in the prefecture. As such, Miyazaki Medical College was formally established on June 7, 1974. Classes were initially held in temporary buildings within Miyazaki city while construction of the permanent campus in Kiyotake, about ten kilometers southwest of the city center, was in progress.

By April 1975, all the classes and administrative departments were shifted to the Kiyotake campus. In 1977, the associated College Hospital was opened, offering necessary clinical practice and primary healthcare services. Within two years, the hospital increased with new wings providing additional 280 beds, making the facility a total of 600 beds, thus improving both patient care and medical education.

The college held its inaugural graduating class on March 25, 1980, with the opening of the Graduate School of Medicine, which received its first graduate students in April of that year. In these years, the institution also developed its teaching and research facilities, such as the establishment of the Medical College Library in 1978, the Animal Experiment Center in 1980, and the Student Health Center in 1986.

The Blood Transfusion Division and the Emergency Division were established in 1988 and 1990, respectively, further enhancing clinical capacity. It added the Department of Laboratory Medicine and created the Intensive Care Unit in 1992, demonstrating its dedication to cutting-edge medical practice.

Research and technology took prominence with the establishment of the Central Research Laboratories and the Center for Medical Information Technology on May 20, 1994. Later developments were the establishment of the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care, the Perinatal Center (1996), Pathology Division (1998), and the Department of Endoscopic and Photodynamic Medicine (2000).

The college also ventured into allied health education in the form of the School of Nursing in 2001 and the Rehabilitation Unit in 2002. Other developments were the Master’s Course in Medical Science and the Frontier Science Research Center, both established in 2003.

In a major restructuring, Miyazaki Medical College was incorporated into the larger University of Miyazaki on October 1, 2003, as a multidisciplinary university with four faculties: Education and Culture, Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture.

The university gained National University Corporation status on April 1, 2004, strengthening its reputation as a leading Japanese university.
