The Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (M.D.) program of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Malta (UM) has reached a milestone with formal accreditation by both the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) and the German accrediting agency ASIIN. This success followed a pilot accreditation process of six European medical degree programs, jointly evaluated by AMSE and ASIIN. Of these, just three programs attained dual accreditation for a full term of five years, positioning UM’s M.D. degree in a select group of European medical qualifications that are known for excellence.
The accreditation process was stringent and thorough. It exceeded the production of paperwork and involved an on-site visit at the University of Malta. The assessment was founded on a comprehensive Self-Assessment Report and a wide variety of supporting evidence, all of which underwent scrutiny by several authoritative organizations: the Expert Panel, the AMSE Executive Committee, the ASIIN Technical Committee, and the ASIIN Accreditation Commission.
Members of the Expert Panel came to UM in April 2019 for a two-day inspection involving meetings with students, faculty, administrators, and other stakeholders, in addition to an intensive review of teaching and clinical facilities.
Upon this thorough review, all the accrediting bodies separately and unanimously awarded unconditional accreditation to the University of Malta’s M.D. programme up to 30 September 2024.
The ASIIN Technical Committee also complimented UM on having responded to the recommendations and suggestions of the review experts in an “exemplary manner.” The programme has since been registered in the ASIIN online directory of Accredited Degree Programmes, which will increase its visibility and credibility in Europe and far beyond.
This accreditation ensures that the University of Malta’s M.D. degree is entirely compliant with the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance (ESG) for the European Higher Education Area, as well as the WFME Global Standards requirements.
This recognition not only solidifies the international status of the University but also enhances the mobility of graduates, academic prospects, and access to specialist training globally.
