The dream of establishing a university in Ioannina traces back to the late pre-revolutionary era, when notable Epirot scholars and thinkers envisioned higher education institutions that would uplift the cultural and academic standing of the region.

This dream gained traction after the founding of the Society for Epirot Studies in 1954, which was instrumental in advocating for a Higher Education Institution. The goal was not just to celebrate Epirus’s rich cultural legacy but also to position Ioannina as an academic, cultural, and intellectual center for the entire area.

In 1964, the major school reform remodeled the administration and organization of Greek schools. Along with this reform, the founding of a Department of the School of Philosophy of Ioannina as a branch of the School of Philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was officially declared in the daily newspapers on 8 May 1964.

The Department was officially established by Royal Decree 735/64 and came into operation during the academic year 1964–1965 with an initial student intake of two hundred students. During its initial years, the Department did not yet possess its own permanent premises.

It was initially accommodated within the historic Ioannina Zosimaia School, and a section of the building that was part of the 406 General Military Hospital was kindly relinquished by the army in order to fulfill the immediate teaching and administrative requirements. In order to meet the expanded needs of space for lectures, the Academy’s big hall was also transformed into a classroom.

The Department was officially inaugurated on 7 November 1964, marking a watershed in the academic activity of Ioannina and opening up the way to the prospective university.

Subsequently, the Medical School of the University of Ioannina was established in 1977, adding further depth to the institution’s academic record and making Ioannina a key medical education hub in Greece. The Medical School has been dedicated to delivering high-standard education and intensive clinical training to students, coupled with cutting-edge scientific research since its inception.

Throughout the decades, it has received general recognition both in Greece and the world for its major contributions to medical science and health. The Department of Medicine is highly ranked in the world’s assessments due to its excellent academic programs, brilliant teachers, and far-reaching collaborations with the world’s leading universities, research centers, and hospitals. Beyond this, it also plays an active role in a broad array of research studies and clinical trials, many of which directly advance medical knowledge and patient treatment.

The study period for the undergraduate medical curriculum is at least twelve (12) academic semesters, which is six years, comprising both the pre-clinical and clinical training periods. This integrated curriculum provides graduates with a comprehensive preparation to face the demands of the medical profession, blending a strong foundation in biomedical sciences with real-life experience in clinical environments.
