University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine – United Kingdom Founded in 1883 as The Cambridge Graduates’ Medical Club, the Society was first available to any suitably qualified member of the medical community with a Cambridge University degree.

The initial objectives of the Society, as set out in its constitution—The Rules of the Club—were two-fold: to advance the interests of the Medical and Natural Science Schools of the University of Cambridge and to encourage a high degree of fellowship among its alumni. The first meeting and dinner of the Society were held on June 27, 1883, at the Marlborough Rooms in Regent Street, London. From the beginning to the start of the First World War in 1914, the annual dinner and meeting were generally in London with exceptions in 1886 and 1911 when they took place in Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. The early years also featured lively social gatherings such as regular Smoking Concerts. The Society’s activities were temporarily halted during the war of 1914–1918.

The Society was re-established with a dinner in April 1921, once more in London. Between 1924 and 1935, the annual general meeting (AGM) and dinner alternated between London and other Cambridge colleges. Sadly, activities were again suspended during the Second World War (1939–1945). The Society was brought back into existence for the second time with a sherry party at Apothecaries’ Hall in London on October 30, 1947. The AGM and annual dinner have been regularly held in Cambridge since 1948.

They are now held annually in a different Cambridge college, normally in early July when the university is at its most attractive. The proceedings are usually preceded by a reception and AGM in the host college’s picturesque court or garden. The Council is made up of a President, a number of Vice-Presidents, an Honorary Secretary and Treasurer, an Honorary Cambridge Secretary (who organises the annual dinners), an Honorary Archivist, and around twelve other members. Normally held in the spring, the Council meeting is preceded by a festive cocktail party in London, at which prospective new members are enthusiastically welcomed. 

In today’s times, the Society is more aware than ever of its responsibilities as a member. While social and professional networking, the Society actively supports the Regius Professor of Physic and the School of Clinical Medicine through monetary efforts. These include fund-raising appeals to aid student scholarships—specifically, students facing financial difficulties or students wanting to carry out further academic study, such as a PhD, before completing their medical qualifications. 

As the financial pressures facing higher education remain under threat, in particular from rising tuition fees, the Society’s charitable activity has become ever more important in supporting the future success and affordability of medical education at Cambridge.
