The Université Paris-Saclay Faculté de Médecine in Le Kremlin-Bicêtre has expanded greatly and was modernized to keep up with the changing demands of its increasing number of students.

About Université Paris-Saclay Faculté de Médecine Le Kremlin-Bicêtre

First constructed in 1980, the old historic faculty building was no longer enough to accommodate the continuous increase in student populations and research work. In response, a significant development scheme was undertaken, featuring the building of a new 6,960 m² extension, in addition to the refurbishment of the current premises.

Conceived by the international company Pargade Architectes, the new extension has been strategically located next to the historic building, immediately opposite the main building of the Bicêtre Hospital. Its site also provides great connectivity, being close to the motorway and the future Kremlin-Bicêtre Hôpital metro station (line 14).

The architectural design was specifically designed to serve both teaching and research activities: the ground and upper ground floors are reserved for conferences, meetings, and scientific events, including a modern 300-seat auditorium. Furthermore, two technical floors and three upper levels of state-of-the-art laboratories have been dedicated solely to advanced medical research.

Completed in spring 2022, the new building marks an important stride forward in enhancing the faculty’s scientific and educational capabilities. It answers three fundamental aims: increasing the total area dedicated to the Faculty of Medicine, which was once restricted to 14,000 m²; delivering new, well-equipped research spaces to enhance innovation; and boosting the faculty’s visibility and global reputation.

The development was funded by the State, Île-de-France Region, Val-de-Marne department, and Paris-Saclay University under the 2015–2020 CPER (Contrat de Plan État-Région).

Additionally, the creation of this new extension has opened the way for the overall renovation of the historic building. With research groups now housed in the state-of-the-art laboratories, about 2,500 m² of ground in the original building has been released.

This land that was reclaimed will be utilized to increase teaching facilities, such as a substantial number of added simulation rooms, thus allowing the faculty to more adequately provide for its 8,000 medical students and further improve the quality of training and clinical preparation.
