The Università degli Studi di Messina, originally founded by Pope Paul III in 1548, has long cultural and academic origins, with a law school in the late 13th century and a famous Greek school in the 15th century. Still, its initial growth was hindered by confrontations with the Jesuits and its actual construction didn’t begin until 1596. 

About Università degli Studi di Messina 

The college prospered briefly but was closed in 1678 after an anti-Spanish uprising. Re-established in 1838 by King Ferdinando II, it was subjected to a second closure in 1847 because of the Anti-Bourbon Revolt. Reopened afterward, limitations on student admission, particularly from Calabria and other Sicilian provinces, created additional challenges. Although downgraded to second class in 1862, efforts by local government brought it back to first-class status in 1885.

The number of students was always small, with 650–700 between 1890 and 1908. The devastating earthquake of 1908 struck again, killing 14 professors and destroying scientific and library facilities. While some argued for closing the college for good, the Faculty of Law reopened in 1909, and by 1911–1912, classes resumed with increasing enrollment. By 1914–1915, faculties of Science, Pharmacy, and Medicine were established again in spite of continuing problems. 

Assisted by local organizations, the Faculty of Medicine completely resumed operations by 1920, with clinics temporarily accommodated at the Civil Hospital. By that time, the university had recovered its prestige, enrolling 1,221 students, and in 1922, Rector Rizzo was able to fend off a planned merger with the University of Catania by the fascist government. Through tenacity and determination, the university weathered these challenges, eventually solidifying its academic presence in Italy.
