Università degli Studi dell’Aquila Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia The roots of the Università degli Studi dell’Aquila trace back to 1458 and 1464, when L’Aquila requested King Ferdinand of Aragon’s authorization to open a Studium equal to those of Bologna, Siena, and Perugia.

About Università degli Studi dell’Aquila Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia

The request was accepted, but no definite proof exists that the Studium was legally opened at the time. Yet, some Aquilan students continued their studies in canon and civil law at the University of Perugia. During the late 16th century, the Jesuits offered higher studies in L’Aquila, and following their expulsion in 1767, their college was converted into a Royal College, which brought scientific education like chemistry, anatomy, theoretical and practical medicine, surgery, and obstetrics by 1792.

Although this was achieved, the college was closed in 1807 by Joseph Napoleon, who reorganized the Royal Colleges. A secondary school with university-standard medical education was founded in 1814 by Gioacchino Murat, but in 1817 King Ferdinand instituted a Royal Lyceum in L’Aquila, providing instruction in law, anatomy, surgery, chemistry, pharmacy, forensic medicine, and other sciences. By 1874, students were able to take practical examinations in pharmacy, minor surgery, and surveying at the Royal Lyceum, while their degrees were awarded by the University of Naples.

The institution’s collapse resulted in it being closed down in 1923 for financial reasons. Nonetheless, in 1949, Vincenzo Rivera opened summer university lessons for students from Abruzzo studying at the University of Rome, which gave rise to the establishment of a free university in L’Aquila in 1952. Rivera was also responsible for the formation of courses in Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Engineering, and numerous scientific observatories.

Università degli Studi dell’Aquila Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia Ranking

International rankings are becoming more and more important in promoting the ability of higher education institutions to attract students and researchers. In the last twenty years, the European Commission has supported a number of programs aimed at increasing the attractiveness of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Consequently, in the last decade, the number of students opting to study abroad has increased by over two times, with almost half opting for European institutions. International rankings serve an important purpose in assisting learners and scholars to select their location by allowing them to compare top universities on a variety of criteria including student and staff populations, international student and staff presence, citations, reputation, awards, and funding.

International rankings also offer a relative evaluation of areas of study and assess the impact of institutions on personal and career development. For universities, ranking high in these tables is a precious chance to become more internationally known. Yet every ranking system has its flaws and biases, and results must be viewed with a knowledge of their respective criteria. Of over 18,000 accredited higher education institutions globally, less than 6% (about 1,000 universities) are ranked.

Being ranked in the top 1,000 is a milestone, especially for Italian public universities, which have traditionally struggled with limited public budgets, high teacher-to-student ratios, and limitations in hiring the best professionals because of set salaries. Disciplinary rankings are a more accurate reflection of the strengths of a university since they rank institutions by particular disciplines and areas of expertise.
