Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale Facoltà di Medicina Chirurgia e Scienze della Salute Ranking

The Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale (UPO) has a long historical tradition that begins in 1228, when the Studium Generale of Vercelli was founded, and becomes the seventh Italian and twelfth European university. Influenced by the Bologna and Padua students, the university was formed with the Charta Studii, signed in a Venetian home.

But this initial university life was brief, closing in 1341 after a series of interruptions. It was only in 1961 that university education resumed in Vercelli, as a collaboration between the Hospital of Vercelli and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Turin resulted in the establishment of medical courses, first in Vercelli, then in Novara. It wasn’t until the 1980s that a project for a free university in Piedmont moved forward, proposing new faculties for Business and Economics (Novara), Mathematics, Physics, and Natural Sciences (Alessandria), as well as for Literature and Philosophy (Vercelli).

The development project “Piemonte Orientale” took place officially under the University of Turin and resulted in various faculties. In 1992, the Faculties of Literature and Philosophy (Vercelli), Medicine and Surgery (Novara), Mathematics/Physics/Natural Sciences and Political Sciences (Alessandria) were officially instituted, and then came the inclusion of Law (1992) and Economics (1993-94).

This development was backed by local consortiums and university education promotion committees. The Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale “Amedeo Avogadro” was established on 30 July 1998, when Minister Luigi Berlinguer signed its charter. The university was named after Amedeo Avogadro, a renowned Piedmontese scientist who made a significant contribution to molecular theory.

UPO originally consisted of seven faculties: Economics, Pharmacy, and Medicine and Surgery (Novara); Literature and Philosophy (Vercelli); and Law, Mathematics/Physics/Natural Sciences, and Political Sciences (Alessandria). All assets, personnel, students, and legal bonds were passed to the newly independent university upon separation from the University of Turin.

With the Gelmini Reform in 2011, the departments were reorganized into seven new ones, controlling teaching and research alike, as well as the School of Medicine. In 2022, the eighth department was added, increasing the academic output of the university even more.

UPO now stands as a top-performing university in national rankings, commended for the excellence in scientific research, technological innovation, education, and cultural activity, through the generous patronage of the local population.
