Universidade do Algarve Departamento de Ciências Biomédicas e Medicina – Table of Contents

Aim is to train doctors with theoretical knowledge as well as with the ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues and perform all essential medical procedures with technical perfection. These three features of good professionalism will be many times verified throughout the program.

Medical technology advancements in the past 60 years have raised the risk of the loss of direct, personal, and human contact with patients. There is a great danger of producing medical technicians who consider patients as mere objects to be intervened upon mechanistically rather than as physicians.

Advantages of Studying in Universidade do Algarve Departamento de Ciências Biomédicas e Medicina

1. Innovative Curriculum & Strong Clinical/Research Integration

The Integrated Master’s in Medicine (MIM) programme is heavily reliant on problem-based learning. The clinical practice is the major component of the course, which goes right from the beginning of the programme.

 2. Modern Facilities & Resources

The Clinical Simulation Centre at the Department is a very modern and fully equipped one, and is one of the best in the region and is also very well ranked in Europe. This facility allows the students to train in the areas of clinical/procedural skills but in a safe environment.

It is an excellent way of reinforcing healthcare in the region, and for students, it equates to clinical exposure in local hospitals as well. Moreover, the opportunity to be at the Algarve Biomedical Centre (ABC-RI) allows not only access to the teaching part but also to the service part which includes clinical care, diagnostics etc.

7. Emerging & Recognized Excellence

The department/faculty is going through a process of growth, accreditation, staff expansion, and with research lines that are ambitious even though the Medicine degree has been quite new . Universidade do Algarve Departamento de Ciências Biomédicas e Medicina – Ranking

The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine (DCBM) at the University of Algarve (UAlg) is tracing new paths in Portugal which are only paralleled by a handful of neuroscience centres in Europe and the United States of America, that allow to cut down the surgical risk in lesion removal, and, most importantly, to increase the probability of keeping the cranial nerves, whose functions are compressed by tumours, intact.

“The method differs from others that also developed similar techniques by the fact that it is possible to perform it in a time interval very close to that of a routine MRI exam. For instance, some centres need 40 minutes for the acquisition of the images; the method have developed allows us to reach the same data in 6 minutes, with all the that comfort entails for the patient, apart from getting better diagnoses due to the other technical parameters used,” says Pedro Gonçalves Pereira.

Another method has been developed recently, called CICE, which is a complement to Tractography that introduces diagnostic sensitivity, especially in the case of big tumours or those with multicompartmental anatomical invasion.

Within this framework, Professor Pedro Gonçalves Pereira represented the UAlg at the Burden Ko Institute annual scientific ceremony Moscow, under the patronage of the Russian Minister of Health where he delivered the report of clinical research on nearly 70 patients, who had undergone surgery at different hospitals in Portugal (Lisbon, Porto, and Funchal). The Burden Ko Institute is the university hospital with the most extensive neurosurgical caseload in the world and, also, the oldest one.

Besides, help was sought to translate the Tractography protocol. For instance, it is worth mentioning that the leading centres that use the cranial nerve tractography method show that it takes 40 minutes for the acquisition of these images. With the UAlg DCBM technique, the same exam is optimized to about 6 minutes, along with image reconstruction approaches that eliminate artifacts and increase the signal-to-noise ratio for nerve tissue.
