UCL Medical School 2025-26

  • UK

UCL Medical School is the culmination of a rich heritage forged by the merger of a number of prestigious institutions, each with a distinguished history in science, medicine, and clinical practice. The history of this renowned institution traces back to 1746 when the Middlesex Hospital started training doctors, one of the earliest moves towards formal medical education in London.

About UCL Medical School

The Royal Free Hospital was established subsequently in 1828 by the visionary surgeon William Marsden, on a humanitarian mission to provide free medical treatment to those who could not pay for it. University College Hospital was opened in 1834 as the first London hospital founded specifically to facilitate university-level medical education, illustrative of an advanced model for combining academia with clinical care. A milestone came in 1874 with the opening of the London School of Medicine for Women—the first medical school in the UK to specialize in training women doctors.

This movement was further strengthened in 1877 when the Royal Free Hospital consented to provide space for female students to finish their clinical training, and by 1896, the institution had been renamed the London Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine for Women. Several decades later, in 1987, Middlesex Hospital’s and University College Hospital’s medical schools merged to become the University College and Middlesex School of Medicine.

This was superseded by still another major merger in 1998, to combine the Royal Free and University College medical schools as the Royal Free & University College Medical School. Lastly, on 1 October 2008, the institution was named officially as the UCL Medical School, embodying its composite identity and going forward legacy of medical education excellence and research excellence.
