After the founding of the School of Medicine in 2001, Tsinghua University moved the academic discipline of Biomedical Engineering into the school and officially established the Department of Biomedical Engineering, a major initiative toward interdisciplinary integration of medicine and technology.
The medical system of the university is also reinforced by its affiliated hospitals: The First Hospital of Tsinghua University, established in February 1959 and subsequently incorporated into Tsinghua in April 2003, serves as an overall Class III comprehensive hospital that covers medical treatment, teaching, research, and preventive health care; and Tsinghua University Yuquan Hospital, initially set up as Beijing Yuquan Hospital in 1983, which was acquired by Tsinghua in April 2003 and renamed correspondingly.
