The university has always moved forward to meet the evolving needs of society — most importantly, enhancing the quality and professional level of pharmacists, and responding to the growing interdisciplinary character of pharmaceutical sciences.

To this end, TMPU established two main academic sections of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences: the six-year Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the four-year Department of Pharmaceutical Life Sciences, both to graduate capable professionals with strong expertise in medicine and life sciences.

Aside from that, in April 2013, the university also opened its own teaching hospital — first named Tohoku Pharmaceutical University Hospital, then Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University Hospital — as the first pharmaceutical university in Japan to be affiliated with a hospital.

The catastrophic Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011 (magnitude 9.0) destroyed vast areas of the Tohoku region and brought severe disruption to hospitals along the Pacific coast. In honor of this disaster, and in response to the urgent need for physicians in the region and the needs of Japan’s super-aged population, the university took a bold step forward by establishing the Faculty of Medicine on April 1, 2016.

The creation of the Faculty of Medicine marked a new starting point in the university’s history — one of creating compassionate, professional, and socially aware doctors capable of providing high-quality medical care and aiding disaster response and healthcare advancement in the Tohoku region.

Today, Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University is an integrated institution with medical and pharmaceutical sciences within one institution. The university remains committed to fulfilling its mission of cultivating medical education, fostering innovation, and standing as the backbone of healthcare reconstruction and development for Japan’s Tohoku region.
