Sheffield University School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences “The University of Sheffield” has a rich and prestigious history, grown out of the amalgamation of three foundation bodies: the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School. Firth College grew up in a period of change in British education, motivated by the Cambridge University Extension Movement. This movement sought to bring university-level instruction into the industrial cities of England that were otherwise poorly served in higher education. The huge success of the extension courses in Sheffield led Mark Firth, a leading local steel industrialist, to found the college in 1879 as a center for Arts and Sciences.

The spirit of community was dramatically shown in 1904, when the University appealed to the people of Sheffield for support. The response was emphatic – more than £50,000 was raised in small donations, especially from local steelworkers and residents. In terms of today’s money, this would be more than £15 million. This remarkable act of civic pride and munificence formed the basis of what would go on to be a world-class university.

In exchange, the University promised to make significant contributions to the local economy and social progress. This promise has been fulfilled by maintaining long-lasting collaborations with the industries of Sheffield and fostering an environment of research. Concurrently, the Sheffield Technical School opened in 1884 due to an increasing need for higher training in industrial and technical fields, particularly in steelmaking. It was first a department of Firth College, but its growth necessitated it being moved in 1886 to new facilities at St George’s Square, the original location of Sheffield Grammar School.

In 1897, the three colleges merged under a Royal Charter to create the University College of Sheffield with the goal of becoming part of the Victoria University federation with colleges in Manchester, Liverpool, and Leeds. Yet, by 1900, this federal arrangement started to break up, allowing each college to develop into a standalone university.

On 31 May 1905, the University of Sheffield was awarded its own Royal Charter. Only two months later, in July 1905, the newly built Firth Court Building on Western Bank was formally opened by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Although Arts, Medicine, and Science faculties were accommodated in Firth Court, Applied Science departments remained in St George’s Square.

At the time of its opening in 1905, the University had only 114 full-time degree students studying Arts, Pure Science, Medicine, and Applied Science. In 1919, after World War I, there were about 1,000, largely an influx of servicemen who had returned. At this time, the Faculty of Applied Science split off into separate faculties of Engineering and Metallurgy. The University also opened its first Hall of Residence (Stephenson Hall) and the Edgar Allen Library (in 1909).

The University’s commitment to education went beyond its full-time degree students with a wide variety of non-degree courses covering subjects from conventional academic disciplines to more specialized ones such as cow-keeping, mining, railway economics, and razor-grinding. In World War I, these were supplemented by war-related activities such as munitions manufacture, medical equipment development, and foreign language instruction.

Between World Wars, enrollment stabilized at about 750 and the University progressed in its modest growth in specialist areas. During World War II, new pressures came in with new demands for research, opening up pioneering studies in radar, nutrition and vitamin science, manufacture of anaesthetics, fuel efficiency, cartography for naval purposes, and teaching English language.

Post-World War II Development

Following the Second World War, the University experienced a major period of physical and academic growth. Older buildings were converted for academic purposes, and many new buildings were constructed. They comprised the Main Library (1959), Arts Tower, Hicks Building, Alfred Denny Building, Sir Robert Hadfield Building, Chemical Engineering Building, University House, five Halls of Residence, and the Students’ Union – all built in the 1960s.

The 1970s witnessed further growth with the establishment of buildings specifically for Geography and Psychology, the Crookesmoor Building for Law and Management, and the construction of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and new student residences. The 1980s brought the Octagon Centre, the Sir Henry Stephenson Building for Engineering, and additional developments at the Northern General Hospital.

In the 1990s, state-of-the-art premises opened for the School of Clinical Dentistry, the Management School, the Division of Education, and St George’s Library with a Blackwell’s University Bookshop. More student flats and extended halls of residence – Stephenson, Halifax, and Tapton – also opened.

Regent Court building hosted Departments of Information Studies and Computer Science, along with the Sheffield Centre for Health and Related Research. The Students’ Union faced complete renovation work totaling £5 million, improved the student social area and student welfare.

With the integration of the Sheffield and North Trent College of Nursing and Midwifery in 1995, the University extended its presence in healthcare education. New buildings on the St George’s Hospital site and at the Northern General Hospital included state-of-the-art facilities for nursing and midwifery research and training.

The University’s official coat of arms is a sky-blue background (azure) with an open book, edged in gold, bearing the Latin inscription “Disce Doce” which translates to “Learn and Teach”. Two sheaves of eight silver arrows, borrowed from Sheffield’s ancient coat of arms, flank the book. The Crown of Success is at the top, and the White Rose of York represents the University’s Yorkshire origins. Under the shield is the Firth College motto, “Rerum Cognoscere Causas”, taken from Virgil’s Georgics, meaning “To Discover the Causes of Things.”

While the University’s logo, displayed in contemporary publications, is a stylized version of the coat of arms and its name in Source Serif typeface, the original heraldic coat of arms is the official emblem of the institution and is copyrighted. Its reproduction is restricted to official University documents and can be used commercially only upon the university’s approval.
