The hospital, originally established in 1963 during the era of East Pakistan as Ayub Hospital, began its journey by offering outdoor services and was initially equipped with pathological and radiological facilities. Over time, it expanded its services to include indoor care, starting with 5 beds and eventually growing to accommodate 25 beds.
Following the liberation war of 1971, the hospital was renamed Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital in honor of Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, a symbol of democracy. Kahn, who also designed the National Assembly Hall of Bangladesh, recognized as one of the world’s premier architectural marvels has become iconic. Recognizing the need for expanded undergraduate medical education, the government of Bangladesh announced the establishment of this medical college on September 5, 2005, along with the upgrade of Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital to a Medical College Hospital.
