The Second World War imposed severe challenges. In 1944, as the front lines approached Budapest, officials tried to relocate the Medical Faculty to Germany.
The relocation was only partly implemented because of the firm opposition of the faculty. The Siege of Budapest caused extensive destruction, ruining most of the Faculty’s equipment and reducing its buildings to rubble.

The period witnessed the introduction of its German- and English-taught medical studies, as well as large-scale infrastructure development like the building of Theoretical Block at Nagyvárad Tér (NET). In January 1, 2000, the university had a significant overhaul when the Semmelweis University of Medicine (SOTE) was merged with the Imre Haynal University of Health Sciences (HIETE) and the University of Physical Education (TF). The name of the institution was changed to Semmelweis University.
Ten years later, in March 2010, the Faculty of Health and Public Administration was added, increasing the number of faculties to six. Nonetheless, in 2014 the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences broke off to become a separate institution, and Semmelweis University was left with five faculties. Later in the same year, there was the introduction of a new organizational system with the Chancellor’s office, harmonizing the university’s structure with the overall framework of Hungarian higher education.
The university expanded further in the subsequent years. As of August 1, 2017, the András Pető College, along with its internationally acknowledged Conductive Pedagogic Centre, was incorporated as one of the faculties of Semmelweis University. Two years later, on August 1, 2019, the university expanded once more by the inclusion of four health vocational schools, thus opening up its educational sphere from higher education to secondary-level medical education.
In recent decades, Semmelweis University has celebrated milestones of historical and symbolic importance. The 200th anniversary of Ignác Semmelweis’s birth was marked with a commemorative year in 2018, and in the academic year 2019/20, the institution proudly celebrated its 250th anniversary.
Since August 1, 2021, the institution has operated under the control of a public-interest trust foundation, the Foundation for National Health Care and Medical Education (NEOA).
