“Qinghai University Medical College” Qinghai University’s School of Medicine, previously Qinghai Medical College, was founded in 1958, a milestone event to herald the initiation of higher medical education in Qinghai Province. It is the province’s only general medical institution of higher learning. Qinghai Medical College was formally incorporated into Qinghai University in November 2004 to build a stronger and more well-rounded academic organization.

The School of Medicine has its activities conducted on three primary campuses, including the Main Campus, the Kunlun Road Campus, and the Yuanshuxiang Campus. Its teaching and academic departments consist of various central departments and centers: the School of Clinical Medicine, the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Department of Public Health, the Department of Pharmacy, the Department of Basic Medicine, the Plateau Medicine Research Center, the Center for Modern Educational Technology, the University Library, and the School of Continuing Education.

The faculty of the School of Medicine includes 266 members (not counting the affiliated hospitals), 177 of whom are full-time teachers. Of these, 115 members are entitled to associate senior professional or higher titles, and 117 have master’s degrees, including 61 who have doctoral degrees.

One impressive academic milestone was achieved in September 2021 when the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) program went through a rigorous accreditation exercise by the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. 

The committee determined that the TCM major satisfied all the requirements set forth in the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards – Traditional Chinese Medicine Major, and certified the program for the maximum period of five years. Qinghai University Medical College Ranking

The Qinghai University School of Medicine has emerged as a major focal point for medical education and research in western China, with strong emphasis on regional demand and plateau medicine. 

The school claims one national key discipline—plateau medicine—and has been acknowledged for two national teaching teams, two national specialty development sites, and four provincial key disciplines. 

It also houses one Ministry of Education key laboratory, six provincial key laboratories, two provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, three provincial “Talent Base” projects, 11 provincial quality courses, and two provincial first-class undergraduate programs in clinical medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, and 10 provincial key courses.

The biggest highlight is plateau medicine, which has been designated as a first-class discipline in Qinghai Province since 2018. The research results have achieved globally pioneering levels, such as the globally recognized “International Diagnostic Criteria for Chronic Mountain Sickness,” which has been specified as the “Qinghai Standard” by the International Society of Plateau Medicine. 

Other important research accomplishments include pioneering research work on Tangut Rheum, a medicinal herb grown locally, and the establishment of a human genetic resource sample library for the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau—a major R&D project designated by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The faculty members of the school have achieved many contributions to research, including one being awarded the “Basic Medical Science Award” by the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and another being awarded the “Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award.” 

Three Qinghai Major Contribution Awards for Science and Technology and five Science and Technology Progress Awards associated with the school have also been received by the province. So far, 319 research projects funded by national and provincial organizations have been undertaken by the university, with a total of more than 100 million yuan raised in research funding. 

Research on developing an echinococcosis test kit with patented intellectual property has gone into the special approval channel for innovative medical devices approved by China’s State Food and Drug Administration. Faculty members have published 477 academic papers, including 278 in core journals, 103 in SCI-indexed journals, and 3 in Science, and have authored or co-authored 58 textbooks and monographs. Additionally, the school’s journal, formerly the Journal of Qinghai Medical College, has been renamed the Chinese Journal of Plateau Medicine and Biology, becoming Qinghai’s first nationally recognized Chinese-language scientific journal. 

In clinical teaching, the School of Medicine has set up 26 bases for clinical teaching, including one directly affiliated hospital, four indirectly affiliated hospitals, eight teaching hospitals, seven internship hospitals, two community health practice bases, and four county-level grassroots internship bases.
