Oita University Faculty of Medicine is highly renowned for its unwavering commitment to education, research, and innovation of medical science. One of the most highly regarded departments in Japan, the Department of Microbiology has its research aimed at unraveling the complex interaction between pathological processes and host response to viral infection, with special reference to rabies virus infection. Interestingly enough, this department is the only rabies research laboratory in all the faculties of medicine in Japan.

Derived from this differentiation, the department undertakes extensive and multi-disciplinary studies covering varied aspects of virology, epidemiology, preventive medicine, and treatment interventions. These initiatives aim to develop scientific knowledge and provide implementable strategies for prevention of viral diseases.

Apart from rabies, the department proactively investigates the infection dynamics of re-emerging and newly emerging infectious diseases such as Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) and COVID-19 through bench-side experimental studies and field-based research in order to bridge the laboratory science-public health practice divide.

The School of Nursing and the School of Medicine are the two dominant schools in the Faculty of Medicine, both of which play a major role in cultivating healthcare professionals with global perspective, knowledge, and compassion.

The School of Medicine aims to graduate students to be competent and ethical physicians who possess a good sense of humanity and are culturally sensitive. It emphasizes developing good academic foundations, ongoing learning, and global outlook in order to allow graduates to adopt a holistic practice in caring for patients by valuing the physical, emotional, and social dimensions of illness.

The School of Nursing, nonetheless, focuses on producing highly skilled and empathetic nurses. It is designed to teach professional skills, clinical competence, and people-focused way of providing healthcare. The program is designed to enable the students to improve physical and mental health of patients, thereby contributing towards the betterment of global health, medical care, and human well-being.

In recent years, Oita University has implemented a series of academic reforms and curriculum innovations to enhance medical education quality. The School of Medicine transformed from a discipline-based curriculum organized by conventional medical departments to a competency-based, integrative educational system that integrates liberal arts, basic medical sciences, and clinical medicine.

This shift prepares students to meet the challenges of modern medicine and the needs of a constantly evolving society. Furthermore, problem-based learning (PBL) and community-based learning (CBL) have been introduced to complement clinical clerkship programs to enable students to gain pragmatic exposure and problem-solving ability in real health care settings.

Similarly, the School of Nursing too has undergone a total transformation with the inclusion of basic, professional foundation, and advanced specialized courses. It lays equal emphasis on internship and experiential learning courses for enriching students’ understanding of the nursing profession and creating effective nurses as clinical contributors.

The Graduate School of Medicine also maintains the university’s research leadership and academic excellence mission. It offers Master’s and Doctoral Programs:

The Doctoral Program consists of professional courses separated into Fundamental Research, Clinical Research, Cancer Research, and Compulsory Electives, for the primary objective of creating highly skilled medical researchers and clinicians capable of contributing to advanced medical science and practice.

The Master’s Program has two departments — the Department of Medical Science and the Department of Nursing Science. The Department of Medical Science strives to train researchers, teachers, and technical professionals capable of excelling in multidisciplinary careers that integrate medicine and life sciences. The Department of Nursing Science aims to cultivate high-quality nursing practitioners and educators equipped with broad medical knowledge, leadership abilities, and a strong sense of commitment to improving patient care and community health.

With its wide-ranging system of education, top-notch research, and commitment to welfare in the community, Oita University Faculty of Medicine has been and continues to be a premier institution for developing skilled, compassionate, and innovative medical practitioners who make significant contributions to Japanese and global advances in medicine.
