Expansion further ensued in 2002, when the Ningxia Health School and the Nursing School were merged into Ningxia Medical College. The development of Ningxia Medical University demonstrates its unshakeable dedication to medical education, scientific research, and social services for over six decades. 

The history of the institution started in October 1962, when former Ningxia Medical College, Ningxia Agricultural College, and Ningxia Normal College were amalgamated to become Ningxia University. Ningxia Medical College then became the School of Medicine of Ningxia University at this point. 

The most significant change took place in May 1972, when the Shanghai Railway Medical College was moved to Yinchuan and merged with the School of Medicine of Ningxia University. In March 1980, the State Council authorized Ningxia Medical College to enroll a maximum of 1,200 students, including postgraduates, undergraduates, advanced-level, and pre-medical students. This year was also significant because the college initiated postgraduate education, advancing its educational influence from the undergraduate level.

The expansion was sustained in November 2002, when Ningxia Health School and Ningxia Nursing School were consolidated with the college to create a new, integrated Ningxia Medical College. By October 2006, the college had reached a remarkable academic milestone by clearing the Undergraduate Teaching Proficiency Assessment of the Ministry of Education, further justifying its standards of education. In September 2008, during its golden jubilee, the institution was formally promoted and renamed Ningxia Medical University, representing its development into a comprehensive medical university.
