Ningbo University Medical School – Ranking

Ningbo University (NBU) was established in December 1984 with a generous gift of RMB 50 million (USD 20 million) from the great Hong Kong shipping tycoon Sir Yue-Kong Pao.

In January 1985, the Ningbo Municipal Government’s application to set up the university had been approved by the Zhejiang Provincial Government with a target student enrollment of 2,000 by 1990. On September 1985, Deng Xiaoping himself wrote in Chinese characters the name “Ning Bo Da Xue” of the university, marking national endorsement.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the university was held in October 1985 with Acting Premier Wan Li and Sir Pao present. Under the mentorship of China’s major institutions—Zhejiang University, Fudan University, University of Science and Technology of China, Peking University, and Hangzhou University—NBU received its first group of students in September 1986 and opened officially in November of that year.

It was granted the authority to award bachelor’s degrees in 1990 and initiated joint postgraduate education. It was among the first group of Chinese universities to enroll students across the country by 1992 and was presented with an inscription by General Secretary Jiang Zemin for Yue-Kong Pao Library.

NBU passed its first national undergraduate teaching assessment in 1995. In 1996, NBU merged with Ningbo Teachers College and the Ningbo Branch of Zhejiang Fisheries College to establish a comprehensive new university jointly governed by the Zhejiang Provincial Government and Ningbo Municipality. By 1998, NBU was authorized to confer master’s degrees, and its Medical School was established with the support of Dr. Tang Yuhan, a renowned medical scientist and academician.

Between 2000 and 2005, several mergers with local education institutions again increased NBU’s scale and academic breadth. It became a provincial key university and acquired more than 50 master’s programs with over 100 million yuan in research funding.

NBU won major national science and technology awards in 2006. In 2007, it was conferred with doctoral degree-authorizing power, and by 2011, it was ranked among the Top 100 in China in terms of academic strength. Jointly funded by the Ministry of Education, the Zhejiang Provincial Government, and Ningbo Municipal Government since 2012, NBU has since obtained a number of highest national scientific awards, becoming the second Zhejiang university after Zhejiang University to have won all three of China’s top science and technology awards.

In 2015, NBU was identified as a core university in the province, and it was officially incorporated into China’s national “Double First-Class” Initiative in 2017, ascending to a top comprehensive and research-oriented university in China.
