Formerly Xinglin College of Nantong Medical College, established in February 1999, it changed its destiny in May 2004, when Nantong Medical College merged with Nantong Institute of Technology and Nantong Normal College to become Nantong University. After this merger, the institution became Nantong University Xinglin College. 

It also became more recognized as a public institution in May 2014, according to the Jiangsu Provincial Public Institution Registration and Administration Bureau.
