Nanjing Medical University – Ranking
Nanjing Medical University (NMU) dates back to September 1934, when it was founded as Jiangsu Provincial Medical College in Zhenjiang—the first medical college in China. Established by Mr. Chen Guofu, a visionary in China’s health care, health education, and administration, the college soon attracted a group of talented scholars, many of whom were PhD holders who had graduated from abroad.
Notwithstanding the dominant feudal culture and low rate of public knowledge about medical science in China at the time, the college boldly advanced in both medical practice and research. It was an active promoter of public health in China by publishing one of the earliest health education magazines and having two national health education organizations, and establishing the Zhenjiang branch of the Chinese Medical Association.
Because of the Japanese invasion in 1937, the college moved to Hunan Province and was renamed Jiangsu National Medical College in 1938 after it merged with Nantong Medical School. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the school became Jiangsu Medical College, with Professor Shao Xiangyi, a famous hygienics expert, as its first president. He played a key role in establishing the basis of health education and research. In 1957, the college relocated to Nanjing and was renamed Nanjing Medical College.
In this time, leading figures such as Professor Yan Shoumin, an established pediatrician, served to promote pediatrics to the important provincial discipline and national PhD program status. Achievements by faculty members were Professor Hou Xide’s model of nerve conduction, Professor Zhu Siming’s creation of cardiac pacemakers, and Dr. Yu Ziping’s research on diagnostics of color blindness. In 1970, the college merged with Nanjing Chinese Medicine College to become Jiangsu New Medical College in an effort to mitigate national tragedies such as the 1976 Tangshan earthquake.
The merger ceased in 1978, bringing the name back to Nanjing Medical College, which was upgraded to Nanjing Medical University in 1993. A new campus was constructed in Jiangning in 2002. NMU now has more than 17,000 students, many of whom have won various national clinical skill competitions.
The university is focused on scientific innovation and runs a large number of key laboratories with superior facilities that have earned three distinguished first-prize research honors. In keeping with its emphasis on globalization, NMU has fostered collaborations with more than 40 higher education institutions across over 20 nations, frequently organizing international academic conferences.
Committed to societal service, NMU has consistently prioritized medical ethics and community outreach, such as Professor Yao Kun’s breakthrough in SARS treatment with anti-IFN alpha in 2003. The university also actively promotes industry collaboration, exemplified by its strategic partnership with Simcere Pharmaceutical Group and the pioneering achievement of China’s first test tube baby by the Clinical Department of its National Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine in 1998.
