The 24th of October 1949 was a turning point in the history of medical education in Lodz. On this day, the Medical Academy of Lodz was established as an autonomous university by decree of the Government of the Polish People’s Republic.

This policy mirrored larger policies of the Ministry of Health during that period, which aimed to transform higher education in line with the political and ideologically inspired ideals of the People’s Republic of Poland (PRL).

With the establishment of independent medical academies, the authorities sought to restrict the power of traditional universities, which were frequently denounced as “seeds of reaction” and blamed for promoting values and scholarly traditions as “unworthy of continuity.”

The new type of medical academies was intended to follow Soviet-patterned ideology and stressed tighter integration of medical study with the conditions of daily life.

The state explained this change by arguing that universities, being too theoretic in nature, were “cut off from practical needs” and hence unable to adequately prepare medical students for work. Economic reasons were also enumerated: funding independent academies was offered as a more effective and easier option for the government.

The Medical Academy of Lodz commenced operations formally on 1st January 1950, when Prof. Emil Paluch, MD, PhD, became its first Rector and Prof. Jerzy Jakubowicz was Vice-Rector.

The Rector’s office was initially in 96 Narutowicza Street, while the Dean’s offices were still in the University of Lodz building at 65 Narutowicza Street. In 1952, the Academy received its own registered headquarters at 81/83 Zachodnia Street.

Lastly, since 1957, the governing and administration powers of the Academy have been housed at Jakub Hertz’s Palace located at 4 Kościuszko Avenue—a beautiful late 19th-century industrialist house constructed between 1891 and 1892, and still one of the architectural landmarks of Lodz.

Not only was the founding of the Medical Academy of Lodz indicative of the politics of the mid-20th century, but it also set the stage for the contemporary Medical University of Lodz, one of the most recognizable institutions in Poland today for medical study and research.
