This early school featured a Department of Science and Medicine (physics et medicinae), which was headed by some of the prominent minds of the day. Some of the most notable individuals include Joachim Oelhafius, a Gdańsk native who in 1613 performed the first public autopsy of a newborn in Northern Europe, and Dr. Jan Adam Kulmus, author of the famous anatomical atlas Tabulae anatomicae (initially published in 1732 and since translated into many languages).

Upon the conclusion of World War II, the Akademia Lekarska was formally founded in Gdańsk, which was subsequently renamed in 1950 as the Medical University of Gdańsk (Akademia Medyczna w Gdańsku). Numerous prominent Polish academics, especially from the University of Stefan Batory in Vilnius, who moved from there after Vilnius was incorporated into the Soviet Union, joined the new academy, in addition to teachers from other pre-war universities in Poland.
At first, the university taught medicine and pharmacy, and in May 1947, the Faculty of Stomatology was founded, which in 1950 became the Subfaculty of Dentistry within the Faculty of Medicine. MUG grew in 1975 when it opened a branch in Bydgoszcz, which became independent as a separate institution in 1984.
Subsequently, in 1993, the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology was established as a unit common to MUG and Gdańsk University. Moreover, in the 2005/2006 academic year, MUG initiated the Faculty of Health Sciences, expanding its instructional offerings even further.Over the course of its existence, the Medical University of Gdańsk has always been preoccupied with developing its teaching and clinical facilities.
