Medical University of Bialystok Faculty of Medicine Bialystok The Medical University of Bialystok carries on the 18th-century tradition of medicine and public healthcare in Bialystok. In the past, there existed a Palace School for Midwives that developed into the Institute of Obstetrics at the hands of Dr. Jakub Michelis in the 19th cen tury. The Institute served as both a healthcare unit and a school, making it one of the few such institutions in Poland.
About Medical University of Bialystok Faculty of Medicine
The University itself was formally founded in 1950 as the tenth Doctor’s Academy in Poland and was quickly reorganized into the Medical Academy. Its seat of operation was the Branicki Palace.
The first Rector, Prof. Tadeusz Kielanowski, was from the Lviv academic world, and a large number of the academic teaching staff were renowned pre-war professors as well as graduates from universities in Vilnius, Kraków, Poznań, Warsaw, and Lublin. In the same year, 168 students started to study at the Medical Faculty. Theoretical faculties were situated in the Collegium Primum building, which had previously been the Teacher Training College.

The university buildings themselves had been reduced to ruins in 1944, and their reconstruction started after World War II. Professors and students from the newly formed Academy worked actively toward rebuilding and improving the facilities. The surviving hospitals in Bialystok were also used as the clinical base for the institution.
In 1951, the Academy was granted the authorization to confer the Doctor of Medical Science title. The first group of medical students graduated in 1955, all being awarded the title of Medical Doctor. In that year, the first edition of the scientific journal Roczniki Akademii Medycznej w Białymstoku was issued, which continues to this day under the title Advances in Medical Sciences.

The first decade of the Academy came to a close with great success. Three graduates of the Faculty of Medicine were conferred the Doctor of Medical Science degree in 1960, and postdoctoral degrees for the first time were conferred in 1961. In 1962, the State Teaching Hospital came into operation with modern facilities for medical education and healthcare.
The Academy initially had only one area of study — Medicine. It was in 1969 that the Division of Dentistry came into being, followed in 1977 by the Faculty of Pharmacy with the Division of Medical Analytics (currently the Faculty of Pharmacy with the Division of Laboratory Medicine).
In 1987, a landmark achievement was recorded when Poland’s first child conceived through in-vitro fertilization was born at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology. A year later, the Children’s Clinical Hospital opened, and in 1989, the city’s first kidney transplant surgery was successfully performed.
In 1999, the Collegium Novum building was opened, and a Division of Nursing was established within the Faculty of Medicine, subsequently reorganized in 2003 into the Faculty of Nursing and Health Care (now the Faculty of Health Sciences).
A landmark event occurred in 2008 when the Medical Academy of Bialystok was officially renamed the Medical University of Bialystok, indicative of its contemporary teaching methods and research standards.
The University expanded further with the opening of new clinics, laboratories, and departments. Two of the most important facilities were opened in the beginning of the 2011–2012 school year: the Euroregional Pharmacy Centre and the new faculty headquarters for the Faculty of Health Sciences.
