The university has its roots in 1941 when the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau consolidated several schools—Northern Shaanxi Public School, China Women’s University, and Zedong Youth Cadre School—to create Yan’an University. 

During the presidency of Wu Yuzhang, the university grew with the addition of Yan’an Lu Xun Academy of Arts and Letters, College of Natural Sciences, College of Nationalities, and so on.

The Shaanxi Provincial People’s Government rebuilt the university in the official capacity in July 1958. A noteworthy achievement came in 1998 when Yan’an Medical College, Yan’an People’s Hospital, and Yan’an University merged to constitute the new Yan’an University, which was declared a provincial key university. 

In 2005, it received joint support from provincial as well as national education authorities, and in 2011, it was once more ranked as a high-level university in the province.
