Medical College of Dalian University – Ranking

History of Dalian Medical University (DMU)

Dalian Medical University (DMU) was founded in May 1947, with the name of Guandong Medical College, and it is the earliest official medical college in Northeast China, two years earlier than the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The first day of school was May 4, 1947, and the first class consisted of 203 students. The first president was Wang Bujun, who was also the associate director of the Northeast China Department of Health then.

In October 1948, upon the command of the Central Government and the Northeast Administrative Committee, the Dalian City Government started the establishment of Dalian University with the College of Engineering, College of Medicine, and Department of Russian Language. Later on, in March 1949, Dalian University was formally founded, and Guandong Medical College was merged into it. Dr. Shen Qizhen became the first Dean of the College of Medicine.

One year later, in July 1950, Dalian University was reorganized into three separate institutions: Dalian Engineering College, Dalian Medical College, and Dalian Russian Language College. Dalian Medical College was now an independent institution, with Dr. Shen Qizhen remaining its president.

In 1965, as a component of a national campaign to favorably support the development of less developed areas, China’s Ministry of Health resolved to move Dalian Medical College to Zunyi City in Guizhou Province. The relocation was fully achieved in 1969, and the college was renamed Zunyi Medical College.

But in December 1978, the State Council of China gave its approval to reopen Dalian Medical College at its original site in Dalian. The first group of 106 students began classes on December 18, 1978, and the formal reopening ceremony took place on January 17, 1979.

As a result of the rapid growth and progress of the institution, the college was formally renamed Dalian Medical University on January 17, 1994, after approval by the State Education Commission. The renaming was marked with a news conference and unveiling ceremony on March 18, 1994.

To provide room for expansion and to upgrade its facilities, the university was moved to a new and contemporary campus in the Lvshun District, about 25 kilometers away from the original location. The ground-breaking ceremony of the new campus was conducted on November 8, 2005, and relocation was completed by August 2007. The new campus measures a total area of 1,510,000 square meters, with 520,000 square meters of built-up area. A residential complex for faculty members was also constructed about 3 kilometers north of the central campus.
