Manchester Medical School The origins of Manchester’s medical education can be traced back to 1814, when Joseph Jordan founded a private anatomy school in the city. This project was the foundation upon which would eventually develop into a leading medical training institution. 

About Manchester Medical School

In 1824, there were multiple independent medical schools that had developed throughout Manchester. Manchester also has a profound history in the life sciences. The establishment of Owens College in 1851 was an important milestone, particularly with the appointment of William Crawford Williamson as Professor of Natural History.

His position covered a broad spectrum of subjects such as botany, physiology, geology, and zoology. The Zoology and Botany departments, which were developed from this base, were later combined to form the School of Biological Sciences in 1986.
