Macau University of Science and Technology Faculty of Medicine “Macau University of Science and Technology” (MUST) was established in 2000, and in 2000, the Faculty of Chinese Medicine (FCM) was also set up. Since then, the Faculty has evolved to be the sole tertiary education institution in Macau providing a whole academic and training system for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

About Macau University of Science and Technology Faculty of Medicine

Macau University of Science and Technology Faculty of Medicine now takes a central role in training professionals in TCM with a full range of academic degrees comprising Bachelor’s degrees in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Medicines, and Integrated Traditional Chinese & Western Medicine, and postdoctoral research.

The foundation of FCM was closely in line with the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government’s vision, which had set its sights on the development of higher education following the handover of sovereignty from Portugal to China in 1999.

Heeding this challenge, FCM launched a five-year full-time Bachelor’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine, laying a solid platform for the sustainable development of TCM in Macau. Gradually, the Faculty has expanded over time to establish an integral academic system with undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral studies. In 2011, the establishment of a postdoctoral research station targeting quality research of Chinese Medicines and new drug development represented the completion of a complete framework of TCM senior staff training and research in Macau.

The Faculty stresses not only academic achievement but also the development of professional expertise and creativity. The curriculum is carefully crafted to combine the rich heritage of TCM with advanced clinical practice, state-of-the-art laboratory training, and global insights.

By hiring top-notch faculty members—such as accomplished scholars, clinical specialists, and experienced researchers from prominent universities around China and globally—the Faculty provides a strong and future-oriented learning and research atmosphere.

Most graduates have continued to make their valuable contributions towards the Macau TCM industry, while a number of them pursued higher studies in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and abroad, or qualified successfully in TCM medical licensing exams to become practicing doctors.

To give the students a richer experience, FCM partners with world-class institutions like Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine and Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. It also offers students rich clinical training experience with collaborations between five teaching practicum hospitals and four graduation practicum hospitals, all of which are Grade-A TCM hospitals in China. In addition, the rapid development of the University Hospital, directly managed by the MUST Foundation, provides students with early-stage clinical practice.

The Faculty also puts emphasis on academic exchange and international exposure. Students are invited to take part in the key academic events like the MUST Great Masters Seminars, where they can learn from renowned experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, and abroad. Overseas exchange program opportunities and collaborations with universities and research institutions in the United States, Portugal, Hong Kong, and Mainland China further widen students’ perspectives and foster competitiveness in the global healthcare and research fields.

In terms of teaching language, the Faculty offers a flexible and international approach. While some Bachelor’s courses are taught in English, the Master’s and Doctoral programs in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Integrated Traditional Chinese & Western Clinical Medicine increasingly incorporate English-taught courses. The Ph.D. program in Chinese Medicines is delivered entirely in English, ensuring that students can adapt to diverse academic environments and strengthen their global communication skills.

Apart from studies, the Faculty strongly promotes extracurricular activities, university organizations, and social practice programs for students so that they can enhance leadership skills, collaboration skills, and cultural adaptability. Through the integration of the legacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine with contemporary educational approaches, global collaboration, and creative research, the Faculty of Chinese Medicine at MUST has emerged as a vibrant platform to cultivate future leaders in TCM and healthcare research, both locally in Macau and globally.
