The London Metropolitan University has a rich tradition that dates back to 1848, marking more than 150 years of mission dedication to education, innovation, and progress. The contemporary University emerged in 2002. This is after a merger between London Guildhall University and the University of North London, marking the first ever university merger within the UK.
About London Metropolitan University
In 1848, to address a challenge to elevate “the intellectual, moral, and spiritual life of young working men in London,” the Bishop of London and Reverend Charles Mackenzie established the Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men. This effort proved quite popular and by 1851 acquired a patron in Prince Albert, who organized annual commemorative activities to celebrate students’ success.

In 1861, increasing student enrollment resulted in the establishment of the City of London College, representing important developments such as the appointment of a principal, in addition to hiring teaching staff. Towards the close of the century, new schools were set up, including the Northern Polytechnic Institution in 1896, which was geared towards improving skills and education levels of men and women.
In 1899, the Sir John Cass Technical Institute was founded based on a charitable trust and provided technical and domestic courses of an immensely wide variety. In the early 1900s, there was immense growth in these schools with full-time and part-time programs and even research programs added on to the existing ones. King Edward VII Nautical College, launched in 1902, and the navigation department helped sustain the maritime teaching traditions of the University.
World War II brought challenges, such as the damage and subsequent bombing of the City of London College building in 1940, but it did not result in the collapse of this institution. The college restarted its activities in 1944 in Electra House, which would serve as home to the Guildhall School of Business and Law for many years to come. The post-war period brought new student numbers, new faculties, and new approaches, including Floats Navigation Schools along the River Thames.
The period of the 1960s and 1970s also marked significant developments under the ‘era of polytechnics’ and the national education reforms of the period. Mergers of various colleges created the ‘City of London Polytechnic and the Polytechnic of North London’ that offered education to the ever-increasing student base.
In 1992, with the Further and Higher Education Act, both polytechnics gained university status. The City of London Polytechnic was renamed London Guildhall University, and the Polytechnic of North London became the University of North London. Ten years later, in 2002, the two institutions merged to create London Metropolitan University and ceremonially opened its doors for the new academic year in 2003, both in London and internationally.
During the 2000s, much was done to revamp the infrastructure at the university and push for academic excellence. These include the opening of the Graduate School by Daniel Libeskind, a Science Centre comprising the largest teaching laboratory in Europe, and the establishment of the London Metropolitan Business School, one of the largest business schools in Europe.
Excellence in teaching quality, research vibrancy, and internationalization continued to bring university wide recognition. It received top ratings from the Quality Assurance Agency, QAA; expanded its international partnerships; and hosted prestigious events, including honorary awards to global leaders such as His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
In the past few years, London Metropolitan University has demonstrated a serious commitment to social justice, equality, and inclusion. In 2020, the university renamed its School of Art, Architecture and Design by removing the name Sir John Cass as recognition of historical injustices associated with the slave trade. The establishment of the Centre for Equity and Inclusion furthered the university’s commitment to ethical responsibility with inclusive education.
