Nanyang University (1955–1980)

Nanyang University, founded in 1955, holds the distinction of being the first and only Chinese-language university established outside China. The idea of creating this pioneering institution was first proposed by Mr. Tan Lark Sye on 16 January 1953. His vision materialized when the Hokkien Huay Kuan contributed 523 acres of land, and Mr. Tan himself donated S$5 million, rallying immense support from Chinese communities across Southeast Asia.

To lay the academic groundwork, a pre-university class was initiated in 1955, preparing students for higher education. On 15 March 1956, the university welcomed its first batch of 584 students across three faculties: Arts, Science, and Commerce. Research efforts commenced in 1957, and by 1959, the first cohort of 437 graduates had completed their studies. Over the next decade, enrollment continued to grow, reaching 2,324 students by 1963. However, in 1980, Nanyang University officially merged with the University of Singapore, leading to the establishment of the Nanyang Technological Institute in 1981 on the same site.

A Rich Heritage: National Monuments on Campus

Preserving its deep historical roots, NTU is home to several national monuments that celebrate its legacy. The former Nanyang University Administration Building, restored to its original grandeur and reflecting distinct oriental architectural influences, was gazetted as a national monument in 1998 and now houses the Chinese Heritage Centre.

Overlooking the scenic Yunnan Garden, this building stands as a testament to NTU’s cultural heritage. Additionally, the Nanyang University Memorial and the original Nanyang University Arch were also declared national monuments in 1998, symbolizing the university’s significant contributions to education and society. Complementing this heritage, the NTU Art & Heritage Museum, recognized under the National Heritage Board’s Approved Museum Scheme, showcases an array of exhibits that celebrate NTU’s artistic and cultural legacy.

Through its rich history, NTU has grown from a specialized engineering institute into a world-class research university, blending innovation with tradition while shaping the future of education, science, and technology.
