About Kagoshima University Faculty of Medicine

The School of Health Sciences alone provides specialized study in Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy, demonstrating a commitment to multidisciplinary education in medicine. The students are educated to be empathetic, capable, and internationally-minded healthcare providers with the ability to tackle both domestic and global medical issues.

The foundation of Western medical education in Kagoshima stretches back to 1868, when the Satsuma Clan called in William Willis, a British doctor, to heal those hurt in the Battle of Toba Fushimi. The same year, the Satsuma Clan founded a hospital and medical school, laying the groundwork for contemporary medical education in the area.

Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi personally extended invitations to Willis, the Tokyo Medical School & Hospital’s first principal (now the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine), to Kagoshima in 1869. Willis introduced the British clinical approach to bedside teaching, educating students on actual patients, and empirically focused medical practice.

He was instrumental in training Japan’s first Western-educated doctors, including Takaki Kanehiro, the originator of Jikei University School of Medicine, and was deeply engaged in public health efforts, including the education of populations regarding safe food handling practices.

The Kagoshima medical school changed several times during the decades. Originally named Akakura Hospital, it then became a prefectural medical school, and although temporarily closed in 1888, its hospital activities continued.

In 1943, it was taken over by the Kagoshima Prefectural Medical Vocational School, the immediate antecedent of the present School of Medicine. By 1947, it was the Kagoshima Prefectural Medical College, and in 1955 it was changed to national administration as the Kagoshima University Faculty of Medicine.

Now, as the only medical education facility in Kagoshima Prefecture, it still pursues its mission to train doctors to serve the expansive and multifaceted southern part of Kyushu island, with its many peripheral islands covering about 600 kilometers in a north-south direction.

Historically, the Faculty of Medicine has had three pillars: education, research, and medical care. With its growth as a National University Corporation, these roles have been further defined: teaching is provided by the Faculty of Medicine, research by the Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences and the Graduate School of Health Sciences, and clinical practice by Kagoshima University Hospital.

Understanding that health involves physical, mental, and social well-being, the faculty adopts a bio-psycho-social approach to medicine. This integrated vision is based on the recognition of the need for not only sophisticated medical treatment but also for full healthcare that encompasses all dimensions of human health.

To ensure this, the university stresses intimate interaction between basic researchers, clinicians, and public health experts to ensure that medical education and services are kept closely tied to the needs of society. Through these interdisciplinary synergies, the faculty creates highly competent medical practitioners with the ability to function in the best interest of society and who can rightfully be called ‘professionals’.

Through its rich history, strong educational system, and vigorous community involvement, Kagoshima University Faculty of Medicine remains a model for medical excellence, innovation, and social responsibility, educating the next generation of healthcare leaders to address the needs of local and global medicine.
