Historical Roots in Nanjing (1906)

The origins of Jinan University lie in Jinan Academy, which was established in 1906 in Nanjing through the initiative of overseas Chinese communities. The academy was set up as part of late Qing Dynasty educational reforms with a role to cater to Chinese communities domestically and overseas. Situated in Nanjing, a cultural and political hub of the Yangtze River Delta—China’s wealthiest area—the institution provided a solid foundation for contemporary education. Relocation and Expansion in Shanghai (1923–1941)

In 1923, the academy was renamed the National Jinan School and moved to Shanghai, which was at that time the largest and most vibrant city in the Far East. As the economic and commercial center of China, Shanghai offered a fertile ground for the school’s rapid academic growth. In 1927, the university was promoted to National Jinan University and became a public university subsidized by the central government. While in Shanghai, the university gained an impeccable academic image and attracted students from all over China and abroad.

War-Time Resilience in Fujian (1941–1946)

The Anti-Japanese War broke out in the 1930s, compelling Jinan University to migrate to Jianyang, Fujian Province, in 1941. In spite of scarce resources, the university struggled on with its academic vocation. Located at the foot of the grand Wuyi Mountains, Jianyang is historically known as the scholarly retreat of Zhu Xi, an illustrious Confucian scholar of the Song Dynasty. This phase demonstrated JNU’s adaptability and will to education, even amidst national upheavals.

Return to Shanghai and Temporary Closure (1946–1949)

After Japan’s defeat in 1945, Jinan University returned to Shanghai in 1946 and continued functioning. Political upheaval and civil war resulted in the suspension of the university in 1949, on the eve of the Nationalist government’s removal to Taiwan.

Rebirth in Guangzhou (Post-1949)

The founding of the People’s Republic of China ushered in a new epoch for Jinan University. It was re-established in 1958 in Guangzhou, a prosperous city in the Pearl River Delta and an entrance to world commerce. Due to its close proximity to Hong Kong and Macao, the university started accepting huge numbers of students from overseas Chinese communities and international students, reaffirming its role as a bridge between China and the world. But the university suffered a great setback when, during the Cultural Revolution, it was compelled to close down for ten years.

Modern Era and Global Recognition

Jinan University’s fortunes changed with the implementation of China’s Reform and Opening-Up Policy in 1978. It started developing rapidly, becoming among the first universities to receive direct state support in 1983, and subsequently attaining “Project 211” status in 1996—a national project to strengthen around 100 best universities.
