There was a turning point in 1400, when King Władysław Jagiełło used the jewelry that his wife, Queen Jadwiga, had left him to pay for the rebuilding of the University. However, the situation started to change during the late 18th century, after reforms initiated by Hugo Kołłątaj within the Commission of National Education. Professors such as Andrzej Badurski, who established a medical clinic in 1780, and Rafał Józef Czerwiakowski, a surgeon and anatomist pioneer, contributed to reviving the faculty’s scholarly reputation.

The 19th century brought a golden age of prosperity. The restored independence of Kraków (1815–1846) enabled the Faculty of Medicine to be successful under the management of great medical geniuses like Józef Dietl, Ludwik Bierkowski, Jan Mikulicz-Radecki, and Ludwik Rydygier, most of whom are seen as founders of contemporary Polish medicine.

Dentistry also started becoming a separate branch: lectures were added to the curriculum as early as 1779, and the first Chair of Dentistry was set up at the University in 1902, headed by Professor Wincenty Łepkowski.

During World War II, when the universities were closed down, medical education went on secretly in the hands of Professor Stanisław Madziarski. Post war, in 1950, the Polish faculties of medicine were divided into separate “academies of medicine.” In Kraków, the newly established Nicolaus Copernicus Academy of Medicine (modern Jagiellonian University Medical College) developed very quickly, opening new clinics and departments, among them the Department of Dentistry (1948), which expanded to several specialized chairs.
