Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine 2025-26

  • UK

Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine, in its existing format, came into being in August 1997 after a series of influential west London medical schools, which each had their own history, merged.

About Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine

The origins of the Faculty date back to the eighteenth century, with institutions such as Westminster Hospital Medical School, where medical education originally included surgeons teaching a few students who were referred to as “cubs.” The Charing Cross Hospital was established in 1823 following Dr. Benjamin Golding’s drive to establish a charitable organization that also responded to the absence of formal medical education, which was later renamed in 1827.

The Westminster Hospital Medical School was established in 1834, following a tradition from the 1700s, and was re-established in 1849 after a brief interruption. St Mary’s Hospital Medical School started in 1854, three years after the establishment of the hospital by Samuel Lane. A landmark was reached in 1893 with Queen Victoria opening the Imperial Institute, encouraging scientific investigation of resources throughout the British Empire.

In 1907, Imperial College was established formally through the merger of three scientific institutions. The British Postgraduate Medical School was established in 1935 at Hammersmith Hospital, the first to provide postgraduate clinical education and research. A number of significant mergers then took place: Westminster and Charing Cross medical schools merged in 1984; Imperial merged with St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1988; and the National Heart & Lung Institute joined Imperial in 1995, eventually becoming a founding division of the School of Medicine.

The creation of the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre in 1994 further augmented Imperial’s research capabilities, with the goal of bridging basic science and clinical application. Collectively, these achievements have developed Imperial College London’s Faculty of Medicine into a globally recognized center for medical education and research.
