Hunan University of Chinese Medicine is a leading institution in Changsha, which is the provincial capital of Hunan Province and a city celebrated for its depth of history and dynamic culture. As one of the province’s core undergraduate institutions, the university occupies an important position in Chinese higher education, especially in the study of traditional Chinese medicine. It was one of the initial groups of national key universities to set up national key disciplines in the nation, a testament to its long tradition of academic achievement and influence.

About Hunan University of Chinese Medicine

The university has two campuses—Hanpu and Dongtang—with a total area of about 1,018 mu (about 68 hectares). Its structure includes 19 colleges, an asset management company, two directly affiliated hospitals, and 13 non-directly affiliated hospitals that constitute a full and solidary educational and medical system. Its roots trace back to 1934 when the Hunan National Medical College was originally founded. It went through a succession of reorganizations during the decades:  in 1957, the Hunan Institute of Chinese Medicine; in 1960, the Hunan College of Chinese Medicine was officially opened to provide undergraduate education.

In 1965, the college was merged with the Provincial Institute of Chinese Medicine, although they were split in 1972 and returned to their original structural frameworks. In 1979, the university was one of the first universities in China to be officially licensed to provide postgraduate education in traditional Chinese medicine. In 1990, the old Hunan University of Science and Technology was incorporated into the college, enriching the academic and research strength further. By 1994, the university had set a precedent by becoming the first Chinese medicine college in the country to open up to international students, taking the first major step toward internationalization.

In 2006, by the endorsement of China’s Ministry of Education, the institution was officially renamed Hunan University of Chinese Medicine. In 2012, it was designated as a “Domestic First-Class Construction University” as part of Hunan Province’s higher education construction strategy. Further reinforcing its position, the university was selected in 2022 for the second phase of the province’s “Double First-Class” university construction plan with a goal of constructing world-class universities and disciplines.

The school is now headed by Party Secretary Dai Aiguo and President Yi Gangqiang, who have continued to carry out its mission of promoting traditional Chinese medicine by means of education, research, and international exchange.
