Hebei University Medical College – A Legacy of Medical Excellence Hebei Medical University has its roots in 1894, when it was established in Tianjin by Governor Li Hongzhang. It is the first western medical school to be established by the government in China, and it is a milestone in the modernization of medical education in China.

About Hebei University Medical College

After the Revolution of 1911, the newly established Republic of China aimed to reform and standardize its schools. In October 1912, the government issued Orders No. 16 and No. 25, formally renaming the school from Beiyang Medical School to Zhili Public Medical College. The college started admitting undergraduate students in the same year, further developing its academic purpose. In 1915, the college was moved from Tianjin to Baoding in order to expand its needs and serve the region more effectively.

The outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War on July 7, 1937, however, signaled a stormy era for the university. As China was transformed into the focal point during World War II in East Asia, the college had to shut down because of the war and instability.

Following the conclusion of the war, the college reopened in January 1946 and resumed instruction. It was renamed Hebei Medical College in April 1949 in response to changes in administrative organization and national policy. Within less than a decade later, in 1958, the school relocated yet again—this time to Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei Province—where it is still located today.

Hebei University Medical College – Table of Contents

One important event took place in 1995, when Hebei Medical College merged with the Junior Medical College of Shijiazhuang and the Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The merger resulted in the establishment of a comprehensive institution known as Hebei Medical University. Nevertheless, in 2013, Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was re-established as a separate entity, again running independently. Now, Hebei Medical University is a leading institution for medical education, research, and clinical practice in China, with a history of over a century and a heritage firmly embedded in both modern and traditional medical sciences.
