Hebei Medical University – Ranking

Hebei Medical University: A Legacy of Excellence Since 1894 Hebei Medical University (HMU) has its roots in 1894 when it was established in Tianjin by Governor Li Hongzhang, the first western medical school to be established by the government in China. This was a milestone in the modernization of Chinese medical education.

After the Xinhai Revolution in 1911, the newly formed Republic of China initiated reforms in higher education. In October 1912, in accordance with government orders No. 16 and No. 25, the school was formally renamed Zhili Public Medical College, and it started admitting undergraduate students that same year, which was the beginning of formal western medical education under the new republic.

In 1915, due to regional development requirements, the college was shifted from Tianjin to Baoding. But its growth was suddenly cut short on July 7, 1937, when the large-scale invasion of China by Japanese forces marked the commencement of the Second World War in East Asia. The war compelled the college to shut down operations. Postwar, HMU resumed its educational mission by reopening and enrolling students again in January 1946.

After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the institution continued to change. In April 1949, it was re-established as Hebei Medical College. To improve its educational materials and accessibility even further, the college was relocated from Baoding to Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital of Hebei Province, in 1958. In 1995, a major transformation took place when Hebei Medical College joined the Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Junior Medical College of Shijiazhuang to become the contemporary Hebei Medical University.

This merger was a strategic combination of Western and Traditional Chinese medical research and education. But in 2013, the Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine branched off once more and became an independent university.
