Hangzhou Medical College Ranking
History of Hangzhou Medical College Early Origins (Pre-1949) The roots of Hangzhou Medical College can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1881, during the aftermath of the Opium War, the British established the Guangji Medical and Pharmaceutical School in Hangzhou, laying the early foundation for formal medical education in the region. Subsequently, driven by the spirit of nationalism in the May Thirtieth Movement, a separate group of patriotic students and teachers seceded to open an independent school dedicated to women’s health. This project gave way to the Zhejiang Provincial Women’s Obstetrics School, which was formally established in 1925 with Zheng Qi as its president. War-Time Relocations (1937–1945)
The advent of the Second Sino-Japanese War caused serious disruption to the school. It was compelled to move to Yongjia in November 1937, Linhai in August 1938, and finally to Tiantai for protection. In spite of these difficulties, the institution continued to provide essential healthcare programs such as midwifery, nursing, pharmacy, and public health. Upon the conclusion of World War II, the school moved back to Hangzhou in 1946 and resumed its academic and training processes.
Post-Liberation and Early Development (1949–1978) After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the school began a new period of development. In 1952, it was renamed Hangzhou Health School of Zhejiang Province and reorganized, and obstetrics and nursing were split into independent disciplines. By 1956, the school moved to the original location of Zhejiang University. In September 1960, it was upgraded to Hangzhou Medical College, adding medical care, Chinese medicine, and pharmacy courses to its curriculum, as well as secondary school courses in pharmacy, medical inspection, radiology, and health education.
In 1962, the school was renamed the Hangzhou Health School and was enumerated by the Ministry of Health among eight major institutions for intensified development. But during the Cultural Revolution, the studies were interrupted, and the school suspended operations for a time. It reopened in October 1974 as Zhejiang Health School. Post-Reform Growth and Mergers (1978–1999) With the advent of China’s economic reforms, the school grew and became increasingly modernized.
In August 1992, the provincial government resolved to merge Zhejiang Health School with the Zhejiang Health Cadres’ Further Education School to create a more integrated institution in charge of vocational training and cadre education. A series of construction projects redeveloped the campus, such as building the Huaxia Building (3,000 sq. m.), a teaching building (4,459 sq. m.), a laboratory building (5,000 sq. m.), and an apartment for students (6,664 sq. m.), introducing modern facilities to the school. It was recognized as a provincial key school in 1993, emphasizing its increased academic significance.
Modern Transformation and University Status (2000–Present) In alignment with national education and science strengthening strategies, and responding to growing needs for healthcare workers, the institution carried out extensive reforms to become a higher education institution. With help from local governments, construction of the Zhejiang Medical Vocational School commenced in December 1999.
In September 2002, the college relocated to the Binjiang Higher Education Zone, dramatically improving its infrastructure. During the same year, an application was made by the provincial government to the Ministry of Education to open Zhejiang Medical College, which was finally approved in May 2004. The college had 13 professional programs like clinical medicine, oral medicine, pharmaceutical science, nursing, medical imaging, and health information management, among others.
In 2012, the college initiated an ambitious strategy to become a full-fledged undergraduate college. On July 19, the goal was included in the provincial government’s 12th Five-Year Plan and a formal application was put forward to the Ministry of Education. Following careful preparation, the college met all the necessary conditions. By July 2015, the provincial review panel had granted the application, followed by the national panel in October at the fifth session of the sixth meeting. Finally, in March of 2016, the Ministry of Education finally granted official approval for the opening of Hangzhou Medical College (document 2016-66). The official news was released in April 2016, a historic milestone for the college’s growth.
