“Guizhou Medical University” History and Evolution of Guizhou Medical University During the initial years of the Anti-Japanese War, Japan’s occupation of North China and the capture of major cities like Shanghai and Nanjing led to the interruption of education for millions of students. Most medical students from occupied regions had to escape to the southwest, which was still under Chinese control.

About Guizhou Medical University

Aware of the imperative necessity to offer continued education to these displaced students and to build up medical education in the southwestern area, the Ministry of Education took firm action. It founded the National Guiyang Medical College in Guiyang, Guizhou Province. On December 31, 1937, the Ministry appointed some eminent medical professionals as members of the Preparatory Committee for the college. Members of the committee consisted of Dr. Li Zongen, a well-known professor at Peking Union Medical College and an early specialist on tropical diseases, Zhu Zhanggeng, a successful public health specialist, and Yang Chongrui, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Li Zongen was named chairman of the committee. The committee officially started working on January 1, 1938, in Hankou, with further support from some key educators like Zhang Zhihan, Hang Liwu, and Tang Peisong, an esteemed biochemistry professor at Wuhan University. Upon arrival in Guiyang, they were given firm support by Zhu Maogen, the then-president of Guizhou Provincial Hospital. The Ministry of Education invested 160,000 yuan (in old currency) from the budget originally planned for National Wuchang Medical College to finance the opening of the Guiyang school. The committee also assumed the Wuchang office of the First Midwifery School of Peking. Between January and February 1938, admissions offices were set up in key cities such as Hankou, Chongqing, Xi’an, Changsha, and Guiyang to recruit displaced medical and midwifery students.

Around 300 students registered, and transportation was arranged for those outside Guiyang. On March 1, 1938, National Guiyang Medical College was officially founded, with Dr. Li Zongen was appointed as its first dean. Since its founding, the college enrolled an excellent team of medical pioneers in various disciplines. Scholars like Lin Shaowen (biology), Hou Baozhang (pathology), Tang Peisong (biochemistry), Zhang Xiaoqian (internal medicine), Wang Jiwu (infectious diseases), Zhu Maogen and Shen Kefei (surgery), Yang Chongrui and Li Ruilin (obstetrics And gynecology), and Zhu Zhanggeng (public health) laid a sound foundation for regional medical education and research.

Following the capture of Guiyang on November 15, 1949, the school community rejoiced at the city’s liberation. On November 25, the school was seized by the Municipal Military Control Commission. In the subsequent months, important personnel like Fan Maoxuan, Zhang Zuliang, and subsequently He Jianming and Chen Dayu were appointed to help in the administration of the college.

As per a 1950 directive of the Ministry of Culture and Education, the term “National” was dropped from the titles of public institutions. In accordance with this, the institution was renamed Guiyang Medical College on December 24, 1950, and brought under the jurisdiction of the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. With guidance from the Communist Party and the government, the college transformed itself—embracing Soviet-style education reforms, updating its curriculum and teaching methods, strengthening its faculty, and actively pursuing scientific research.

A new spirit of solidarity and scholarly excellence started to take root. Even with the Cultural Revolution’s challenges, Guiyang Medical College’s faculty and students persisted in their mission. Led by the school motto— “Be honest to oneself, loyal to the group, respect the past, and think of the future” —they continued to teach, carry out research, and provide medical services.

Guizhou Medical University Accreditations, Affiliations, Recognitions

The college carried out specialized training, established branch campuses in Jinsha and Zhijin, and promoted research in key fields. In 1971, the Guizhou Provincial Cancer Prevention and Treatment Research Office was founded. By 1978, the school gained national recognition for scientific work in fields like endemic fluorosis, microelectrode technology, and malaria vector domestication.

After the Third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee, the school embarked on a new stage of revitalization and development. In 1978, graduate admission was resumed, and the first batch of master’s students started their studies under experienced professors like Jin Daxiong, Meng Qinghua, and Liu Jialiu.

In 1981, the school was authorized to grant master’s degrees in four majors: medical biology, parasitology, pathological anatomy, and internal medicine. By 1982, Guiyang Medical College started admitting students from all over the country and increased its academic courses to 15 majors in 1984. In 1985, it was the first in China to be accredited to recommend outstanding undergraduates for master’s courses without examination.

In 1997, it was approved to grant master’s degrees on the basis of comparable academic qualifications. The school again achieved a milestone on September 8, 2003, with the State Council Academic Degree Committee authorizing it to award doctoral degrees in Pathology and Pathophysiology. By 2005, it had passed the national undergraduate teaching evaluation and was designated a key university in Guizhou Province in 2006.

In 2009, world-famous pulmonologist and academician Professor Zhong Nanshan was made Honorary Dean, and the school set up a postdoctoral research station. In 2011, it achieved more doctoral and master’s degree approval points and started building a 1,500-acre South Campus to enable more expansion. In 2012, the university was designated as a “Basic Capacity Building Unit for Central and Western Universities” and as one of the pilot schools of the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program. In 2014, after the completion of the South Campus,  Guizhou Medical College had two campuses. On January 30, 2015, the official name change was approved by the Ministry of Education, making Guizhou Medical University the first medical university in Guizhou Province.

On June 15, 2015, a formal renaming ceremony was conducted, marking an important milestone in the development of the institution. The same year, the university incorporated the Key Laboratory of Natural Product Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Guizhou, enhancing its research strength and paving the way for a national-level innovation platform.
