Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine – Ranking

Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine (GXUCM) has a long and glorious history that goes back to 1934, from the Guangxi Provincial Nanning District Medical Research Institute. The medical research institutes of Wuzhou, Nanning, and Guilin were amalgamated in 1941 to create the Guangxi Provincial Medical Research Institute. One year later, the Guangxi Provincial Chinese Medicine Hospital and a drug planting farm were also set up to act as vocational training bases.

In 1945, the institute was renamed the Guangxi Provincial Nanning Advanced Chinese Medicine Vocational School—the sole public Chinese medicine school in China at the time—providing undergraduate-level education and cultivating a generation of leading TCM masters. Respected names like Wei Laxiang, Liu Liuqiao, and Huang Xiaomei were instructors at the college who groomed future leaders like Ban Xiuwen, Lin Peixiang, and Li Shigui, who greatly contributed to the growth of Chinese medicine in Guangxi following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. After the consolidation of the new China, the school reopened in 1956 and went on to consolidate its Nanning and Wuzhou branches into the Guangxi School of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1957.

It was renamed Guangxi College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1958, resumed undergraduate studies in 1964, and incorporated Nanning Medical College in 1970. The college began enrolling foreign students in 1976, started postgraduate courses in 1978, gained the prerogative of awarding master’s degrees in 1986, and started training doctoral and postdoctoral students in cooperation with other institutions in 1996 and 2009, respectively.

It was formally renamed Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine by the Ministry of Education in 2012 and moved to the Xianhu Campus in 2013. Now, GXUCM is a comprehensive modern university of Traditional Chinese Medicine, covering liberal arts, science, engineering, and management, and is well-known for its unique features in ethnic medicine and its strong promotion of the integration of education, research, and industry.
