Fayoum University Faculty of Medicine Al-Fayoum

The concept of creating a Faculty of Medicine in Fayoum was conceived because of the pressing need to deal with the extensive health issues prevalent in the area, such as schistosomiasis, renal failure, hepatitis, urinary tract infections, disorders in the digestive system, and recurring fevers.

About Fayoum University Faculty of Medicine Al-Fayoum

Due to these urgent medical requirements and the calls of Fayoum’s political figures and citizens, the Cairo University Council agreed on March 30, 1994, to open a branch of the Kasr El Aini Faculty of Medicine at Fayoum.

After this resolution, the Committee for the Sector of Medical Studies of the Supreme Council of Universities (SCU) established a specialized committee to examine the viability of establishing the faculty.

During its February 9, 1995 session, the committee granted its approval to set up the faculty, and subsequently, on May 7, 1995, the SCU issued its final approval for:

Starting academic studies from the 1995/1996 academic year with an initial intake of 50 students.

In the beginning, lectures were held in temporary premises at the Kasr El Aini Faculty of Medicine in Cairo, awaiting completion of the Fayoum branch buildings.

On September 25, 1997, the President of Cairo University sanctioned the opening of academic studies at the Fayoum campus itself. In the second semester of 1997/1998, first- and second-year students started taking lectures regularly in Fayoum, with third-year students remaining in Kasr El Aini until a specialized teaching hospital was built in Fayoum.

On 31 July 1996, the Cairo University Council formally approved complete independence of the Fayoum branch, making it an independent Faculty of Medicine. The SCU ratified the decision on 31 October 1996, noting that the faculty had achieved the basic prerequisites for autonomy.

Progress was made consistently:

It was on April 6, 1998, that the Governor of Fayoum sanctioned the conversion of Nafisa El Hosary Hospital into a teaching hospital. Following the necessary alterations, the hospital with 80 beds was inaugurated on March 24, 1999.

The Ministry of Health, in decrees Nos. 20 and 73 of 1998, accorded Fayoum Faculty of Medicine the authority to use all hospitals under Fayoum Governorate for instruction, training, and clinical practice. A formal agreement was established with the Ministry of Health whereby faculty students and physicians are able to train in all affiliated hospitals in the area.

The old university building was also refurbished and redeveloped to serve as a University Teaching Hospital with 60 beds. Nevertheless, due to engineering limitations, this facility was subsequently evacuated and clinical departments were shifted to Nafisa El Hosary Teaching Hospital.

In addition, Prof. Dr. Galal M. Said, former President of Fayoum University, tasked the transformation of the Faculty of Engineering’s Exam Hall (Annex Building) into an interim teaching hospital until a brand new, state-of-the-art university hospital is finished.

Lastly, the endeavours came to fruition with the promulgation of the Republican Decree No. 193 of 2005, declaring the independence of Fayoum Faculty of Medicine from Kasr El Aini finally, recognising it as a distinct and independent medical school within Fayoum University.

As a response to the needs of the people of Fayoum and their representatives and because of the generalized spread of diseases in the governorate due to irrigation and drainage conditions—most importantly schistosomiasis, kidney and liver failure, urinary tract disease, digestive disorder, and fever—the Cairo University Council accepted, on March 30, 1994, the opening of a branch of the Kasr Al-Aini Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University’s Fayoum branch.

After this decision, the Supreme Council of Universities (SCU) – Medical Studies Sector Committee established a special committee to study the project. On February 17, 1994, the committee toured Fayoum Governorate, surveyed local hospitals, and suggested the utilization of Fayoum General Hospital and its related specialized hospitals as teaching hospitals for the new faculty.

The proposal was formally adopted in the committee’s meeting of February 9, 1995, and subsequently endorsed by the SCU during its meeting of May 7, 1995, opening the door for the opening of the branch. Academic operations commenced in the academic year 1995/1996 with the acceptance of 50 students, who initially studied temporarily at Kasr Al-Aini Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, until the Fayoum premises became available.

On 25 September 1997, the President of Cairo University at the time approved the relocation of the first- and second-year students to the Fayoum headquarters from the second semester onwards, while third-year students remained in Cairo until a teaching hospital was obtained in Fayoum.

Thereafter, on July 31, 1996, Cairo University Council sanctioned the separation of the Fayoum branch to be established as the Fayoum Faculty of Medicine, which was subsequently ratified by the SCU on October 31, 1996, once it had verified that all conditions were in place. For the purpose of delivering clinical training, Nafisa Al-Hosary Hospital was assigned by the Governor of Fayoum on April 6, 1998, to be converted into a university teaching hospital for 80 beds and inaugurated on March 24, 1999.

In addition, the Minister of Health issued Decrees No. 20 and 73 of 1998, which entitled the faculty to use all the hospitals of Fayoum Governorate for the purposes of teaching and training. A memorandum of understanding was also signed with the Ministry of Health to enable doctors and students to practice and acquire scientific training in the hospitals.

The former branch building of the university was also remodeled into a University Educational Hospital with a capacity of 60 beds, reinforcing the clinical infrastructure of the faculty and consolidating its status as an independent and essential institution for medical education in Fayoum.
