During the first decades, VU Amsterdam was deeply associated with Protestant Christian and Reformed traditions and became an institution where science and faith could exist in symbiotic relationship and learn from each other.

The VU Association, the representative organization, took over governance and strategic guidance. VU was funded completely by donations from its supporters for the first seventy-five years of its life. A significant effort was the VU-busje, a fund-raising initiative started in the 1930s by the women’s organization Vrouwen VU-hulp, where a collection box with Abraham Kuyper’s portrait became a symbol of grass-roots support for the university.

Early small, VU Amsterdam was centered in the city, and its initial faculties of theology, law, and the humanities occupied a building at Keizersgracht 162. The university grew, however, opening a medical faculty with its clinic and physiology laboratory at Valerius Lein in Amsterdam-Zuid in 1907, then the sciences faculty in 1930. Physics and chemistry laboratories were built on De Lareses’re, signaling the institution’s gradual evolution towards a contemporary multidisciplinary university.

In the Second World War (1940–1945), VU Amsterdam was severely challenged. While classes still went on at first, Nazi occupation rapidly introduced strict measures. In 1943, students were required to sign a declaration of loyalty and carry out the Arbeitseinsatz (labour deployment) in Germany. The authorities of the university declined to oblige and opted to close its facilities instead. A number of students went underground, while several buildings of the university served as centres of resistance activity.

Following emancipation in 1945, the university paid tribute to those who had died with memorial services and the erection of a commemorative plaque, which is now situated in full view close to the auditorium in the main building.

Since the 1950s, VU Amsterdam has been in an era of accelerated expansion. The number of faculties grew, student numbers exploded, and in 1970 the university had over 10,000 students. In that year, VU also started receiving state subsidies, putting it on an equal footing financially with other Dutch universities.

This also signified a relative drift away from its sole Reformed Christian identity, as the university adopted a wider range of academic and social responsibilities while still preserving its unique heritage.

To make way for the expansion, new buildings were constructed in Amsterdam-Zuid. It was decided to move to a new campus in Amsterdam-Buitenveldert. The initial buildings, such as the University Medical Center (VUmc) and facilities for Biology and Physics, were ready in 1966, and the official main building in 1973. During the subsequent decades, other faculties moved to this new campus, and student accommodation was set up at Campus Uilenstede, and an active academic community developed.

In the twenty-first century, VU Amsterdam has consolidated its position as a world-renowned research and teaching institution. Through ongoing campus revitalization projects, the university has become more integrated with the vibrant Zuidas business district, promoting partnerships among academia, healthcare, and industry.
