About EDU Faculty of Medicine and Health Kalkara

The University itself had been created just a few years earlier, by a decree dated 22 November 1769, signed by Grand Master Pinto de Fonseca and officially authorized by a papal brief on 20 October 1769. At the time of its foundation, the Principe dell’Accademia dei Medici was Michelangelo Grima, who also held the prestigious Chair of Anatomy and Surgery.

Among the other notable early members of the Accademia were Giorgio Locano, Gaetano Azzopardi, Giorgio Imbert, Gio Domenico Biagio, Giuseppe Bigeni, and Lorenzo Thein. This body bore the responsibility of conducting examinations for students and ensuring academic standards.

The first statute of the new University was issued on 22 May 1771. At that time, the medical course spanned five years, during which students could earn a Bachelorship after two years, a Licentiate after four years, and a Doctorate upon completing the final year.

The curriculum covered vital subjects such as botany, chemistry, anatomy, surgery, and medicine. However, the full licence to practice medicine was only granted after completing six years of service at the Sacra Infermeria, which was Malta’s foremost hospital and medical training center.

The history of the Faculty was also shaped by political upheavals. With the French occupation of Malta in 1798, General Napoleon Bonaparte abolished formal university teaching by decree on 18 June 1798. However, after the French were expelled, Sir Alexander Ball reinstated the University on 6 November 1800, allowing medical studies to resume that same year.

The first three doctors of this renewed phase graduated in 1804. In the early 19th century, only a Licentiate was awarded to successful candidates, but from 1822 onwards, the Doctorate in Medicine was introduced, granted a year after the completion of studies. By 1838, the Licentiate degree was abolished under the Fundamental Statute of the University of Malta, which aligned the Medical Faculty with contemporary medical schools in England.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery continuously adapted to the evolving landscape of European medical education, with particular emphasis on aligning with the standards of the United Kingdom. A significant milestone was reached in 1898–99, when Maltese graduates were granted permission to sit for the final examinations of the Conjoint Board of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Surgeons, as well as for the diploma of the Society of Apothecaries of London.

In 1901, the University of Malta’s medical degree gained official recognition across the British Empire, allowing graduates to register in England as Colonial Practitioners. This recognition not only enhanced the prestige of the Maltese qualification but also opened pathways for graduates to practice medicine throughout the Commonwealth and to pursue advanced studies in emerging medical specialties. While many Maltese doctors advanced their careers across the British Empire, others also established themselves within European academic and clinical institutions.

In modern times, the Faculty continues its long-standing tradition of excellence. With Malta’s accession to the European Union, the Maltese medical qualification now enjoys full recognition across all EU member states, ensuring that graduates remain competitive in both local and international medical fields.
