Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine commemorates its 150th year in 2024. While medicine and medical practice have been studied in Japan for centuries, the modern system of medical education and research was established following the Meiji Restoration.

About Chiba University School of Medicine

The university department’s roots trace back to Kyoritsu Hospital in 1975, making it one of the top medical schools in the nation with a rich and long-lasting tradition.

During the last century and a half, the university department has produced many eminent clinical physicians and medical scientists. A hallmark of strength of the institution is not only to understand the pathophysiology of disease but also to apply this knowledge to devising therapeutic strategies.

In accordance with this integral approach, the department has more recently applied the term “therapeutics” to describe its academic discipline. Presently, university research and teaching activities are progressing in the context of “Pioneering the Therapeutics”, combining clinical and basic research to promote innovation in medical therapy.

The pandemic outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020 brought unforeseen challenges globally, underlining both medical and societal weaknesses. As society is slowly moving towards a post-COVID world, preparedness against future emerging infectious diseases is still of paramount importance.

Recognizing this, in 2022, the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) launched the “Japan Initiative for World-leading Vaccine Research and Development Centers”.

The university department was selected as one of four national synergy centers collaborating with the flagship center at the University of Tokyo. Complementing this effort, the Research Institute of Disaster Medicine (RIDM) was established in 2021, creating a closely coordinated structure for vaccine development. Through this partnership, the university department is actively engaged in creating new vaccination technologies, enhancing Japan’s preparation for future pandemics.

The pandemic also highlighted the overload on healthcare systems, especially in rural regions where there are few medical resources. To counter this, in 2022, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) promoted the “Development of Human Resource Centers for Medical Professionals in the Post-COVID Era” initiative.

The university department was chosen to be included in this program aimed at developing medical professionals who can tackle intricate healthcare issues affected by social, economic, and environmental factors. Through this project, University are developing physicians and researchers with a high sense of social responsibility and a strong passion for community-based medicine.

Also, since April 2024, national regulations of work hours for medical doctors will be introduced. This necessitates the department to maximize undergraduate education programs in order to provide efficient and quality training.

In 2023, the university department was selected as one of four universities to conduct MEXT-sponsored programs that strengthen the education of high-level medical professionals, especially in community medicine. It also focuses on consolidating the country’s international competitiveness in clinical research capabilities, which have struggled to keep up with global competitiveness.

Through the leadership of the university hospital’s Clinical Research Center, university department is promoting highly qualified human resources in clinical research and developing research facilities to elevate Japan’s medical innovation.

Essentially, the role of a university medical department is threefold: to advance front-line medical research, cultivate innovative physicians and researchers, and guarantee timely, quality medical care. At Chiba University School of Medicine they seek to foster these goals in conjunction with their “Pioneering the Therapeutics” philosophy by combining research, education, and clinical practice to produce medical professionals that are innovative as well as socially responsible.
