Cairo University Faculty of Medicine – Ranking
Cairo University Faculty of Medicine Cairo
The Kasr Al Ainy School of Medicine holds the distinction as Egypt’s and the Middle East’s oldest school of medicine, being a landmark institution in the history of medical education in the region. The school has its roots in the Abu Zaabal Military Hospital, established in 1827 by Mohamed Ali Pasha, Egypt’s ruler, with the help of the celebrated French doctor Dr. Antoine Clot Bey. This was the start of formalized medical education in Egypt.
In 1837, spurred by the dreams of expansion and the necessity for a more central location, the School of Medicine was relocated from Abu Zaabal to Kasr Al Ainy. The new campus not only had the potential to house 1,500 beds in the hospital and 300 students, but it was also located at the very center of Cairo—far more accessible than the remote area of Abu Zaabal at the edge of the city.
The title Kasr Al Ainy was derived from Shehab El-Din Ahmed Ibn Al-Ainy, one of the chief figures of the 15th century, who constructed the palace upon which the medical school was later built.
Through the centuries, the building changed purposes—it was originally a magnificent residence, was later used as a hotel for kings and princes, and then, during the French Occupation of Egypt, it functioned as a military hospital.
Later on, Mohamed Ali Pasha formally assigned it as the new residence of the medical school and hospital. Its position—between Old Cairo and the crowded quarter of Boulac, overlooking the green island of Rawdah—was well-suited for education and medicine.
The relocated institution thrived soon after. Provided with dormitories, refectories, and facilities that were advanced for the 19th century, Kasr Al Ainy reflected the finest hospitals of Europe during its time. It contained a rich library, a natural history museum, and physics and chemistry laboratories, and provided its students with a balanced education. Its graduates found work in many countries of the East and disseminated medical knowledge and practices based on their education in Kasr Al Ainy.
With the founding of Cairo University in 1908, Kasr Al Ainy became its Faculty of Medicine by official decree, solidifying its position as the foundation of Egypt’s higher medical education. The faculty’s stature further increased under inspired guidance, most notably during the time of Dr. Ali Pasha Ibrahim, the school’s first Egyptian Dean and illustrious surgeon. He was passionately devoted to adding facilities to the institution and he dreamed of building a new modern hospital on Rawdah Island, across from Al Ainy Palace.
With his persistence and eloquent lobbying, Dr. Ali Pasha Ibrahim persuaded King Fouad I to dedicate the land that was originally planned for a palace for his son, Prince Farouk. In spite of the difficulties brought about by the international economic depression of those times, his perseverance was rewarded with the funds needed to construct one of the world’s biggest hospitals. This colossal feat underscored the strength of will as well as the international aspiration of Kasr Al Ainy.
Today, the Kasr Al Ainy Faculty of Medicine is not only a shining star of medical education and research in Egypt but also an institution that has built the medical landscape of the Middle East. Its legacy of service, innovation, and academic excellence has inspired generations of doctors, surgeons, and healthcare leaders across the globe.
